Building a cheap office rig -- NEED ADVICE!

Thread Starter
** Computer will mainly be used for surfing and watching videos **

Let's start with what I have:

- E6600 C2D w/ mobo
- 4GB RAM
- GPU (8800 GTS & 4890)
- Monitors

Couple of options:

1. Buy necessary components to run the older parts

>> PSU, case, HDD

2. Buy a pre-built rig (cheaper?)

>> Something APU-based (or maybe Sandy/Ivy)
>> Could also build it myself, but could be more expensive?

I'm leaning towards the first option so that I could replace my main PSU (an old HX620). The only issue is that my DDR2 RAM seems faulty (cause of my BSODs when I used to use the parts), though I do have a spare set of DDR2 RAM (2GB) that should be okay.

Thoughts? Opinions? Again the build is only going to be used for surfing and watching videos. It's also not going to be powered on 24/7 -- the user's your usual casual computer person.

Thanks!

CPU $56
AMD A4-5300

Motherboard $68
Asrock FM2A75 Pro4-M

Ram $23
AMD Performance Edition 4GB

HDD $56
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB

Grab a Dell refurb for $400 and call it a day. The warranty support alone makes it worth it in an office environment.

I would choose your option 1 and spend more or less than $190, sample parts are below

hdd Western Digital WD Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ~ $ 70 f/s

psu Antec TruePower New TP-750 750W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Modular Power Supply ~ $ 90+10 = $ 100 shipped

atx TOPOWER TP-4106BB Black SGCC 0.4mm ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ~ $ 20 f/s
Total ~ $ 190

Just exchanged your old corsair HX620 to the new one above for your existing sig rig, Antec TP 750W is plenty for your sig rig, its the best value for modular & will match your antec case. the rest will just fill your missing parts. Newegg-us

or

hdd Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM ~ $ 75 f/s

psu Corsair Professional HX650W 650W ATX 12V 52A 24PIN ATX Modular Power Supply Active PFC 120mm Fan ~ $ 90 f/s

atx Apex SK-393-C Mid Tower ATX Case Black No PSU Computer Case ~ $ 25 f/s
Total ~ $ 190

this one has smaller modular psu wattage but bigger capacity hdd. NCIX-US.

Either build will do.
