gpu suggestion

Thread Starter
I am going to be building my sister and brother in law a new computer. My brother in law has some computer games lying around that he wants to be able to play. I would like to know which gpu to get based on the games he has. Medium to low settings.

- Star Wars Battlefront
- Aliens vs Predator
- Star Trek Voyager Elite Force
- Bang! Gunship Elite
- Star Trek Starship Creator
- Riven the Sequel to Myst
- Half-Life Platinum Collection
- Warcraft 3 Battle Chest

Also, he'll want to be able to play Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2.

Would something like an AMD 6670 be good enough for medium to low settings? What about an Nvidia 650. Price range for the gpu is $100-150 but preferably closer to $100.

Edit: System specs (copied from Anandtech):
NZXT Tempest 210
Antec Neo Eco 400C
Intel Core i3-3220
MSI B75MA-E33
Wintec One 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Western Digital 1TB

Thanks for the help.

Sam

Those would be the cards for that price range at medium to low gaming. The rest for budget rig are ok, except for RAM, where there is no big price range difference get Samsung, Corsair Vengeance or G. Skill Ripjaws.

Edit, right now Canada Computers has a special on the 7770 for $109 (maybe some other stores as well);

Thanks for the suggestion!! I will be sure to grab some Corsair Vengeance ram. Is the Nvidia 650 better than the AMD 7770?

Edit: just did a google search. Looks like the 7770 is better. Thanks for the link!! biggrin.gif

Im planing on upgrading from my 6970. i have about $600 to spend and in no rush for the knew cards. My questions, which of the three is the best choice.1) get X2 GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB or X2 XFX Double D Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition Black Edition 2GB 2) get X1 ASUS MATRIX Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB 3) wait for the 8000 series? Thanks for all the future insight.

I think the HD6970 is still a pretty capable card and will max out 85% of games out there at 1080p.
If you can wait to get HD8000 series you will even notice a bigger jump.
Spending $599 or $499 for a GPU especially at this period of time is just bad IMHO.

Get a single HD 7950 and overclock it to 1.15 Ghz. That should be enough to run games like BF3 at max settings even at 1440p at 45+ fps. You are looking at close to 2x the performance with a HD 7950 at 1.15 Ghz when compared to the HD 6970. massive upgrade. thumb.gif
