Not much of an improvement.

Definitely not worth it.

Would be MAYBE 15% gain.

Plus next gen should be just around the corner at the rate AMD has been releasing.

Depends. I recently had tested a 6950 (1GB version, small OC) and it was actually noticeably slower than my 7850 2GB @ 1100/1400 or so.

It was more than likely a memory size limitation, but a 6950 2GB vs a 7870 2GB..... I'd go for the 7870 due to the potential to overclock, lower power consumption, less heat and less noise.

7870 is about ~10% faster than a 6970. Both equipped with Catalyst 12.11 beta. Your 6950 will be significantly slower.

The 7870 is very overclock-friendly and can be pushed just as aggressively as its Tahiti brothers. Overclocked, it is massively faster.

yes. The HD 7950 is every bit the worthy upgrade. HD 7950(1.15 Ghz) would be 1.8x - 2x the performance of HD 6950.

DId you know that the 6950 is heavily underclocked much like the 7950 is right? You probably also think the 6950 is incapable of being overclocked right? The new gen will always be faster but not massively. Massively is the 7970 at max clocks. 7870 is not massively.

It's ~20% slower than a 7870 and ~30% slower than a 7950, stock for stock. That's massive to me in this age of 'tick-tock' performance...

Both cards also have massive overclocking headroom much greater than the 6950

I think you're missing the point. 6950s are clocked to a ludicrous 800 mhz. Guess what happens when you clock them to 6970 speeds. And the good ones will overclock more on top of that. The gap should stay the same. Also, 7870s are having a bit of issues with crap parts leading to numerous issues right? It's not a move that makes any sort of sense.
