Worth it upgrading from amd 6950 to 7870? - Page 2

I wouldn't upgrade it. Stick with it for now until HD8xxx series cards come out.

It depends on what your looking to achieve with a GPU upgrade if you were to do so. Your results are going to be heavily dependent on your hardware, monitor(s), games you play, settings you use, desired framerate, etc...

From a raw hardware perspective, the graph already posted above clearly illustrates how much an increase in percentage of performance the HD7870 is in comparison to the HD6950. Whether or not you will have a tangible real world feel of a performance increase is heavily dependent on what I stated in the first sentence of this post.

The gap should stay the same. Also, 7870s are having a bit of issues with crap parts leading to numerous issues right? It's not a move that makes any sort of sense.

7870 and 7950 have larger overclocking headroom. I'd expect those gaps to widen

Tell me. What is an average overclock for a 6950?

Overclocks vary, I had four that did upto 1K/1.5K. What's this about the 7950? Current ones are getting gimped memory chips, getting voltage locked etc. 7870s are black screening. Yea good luck OP, hope you don't get a bad one.

Can you be any more pessimistic? What exactly are you suggesting? Only 7950 I've heard of being locked is the Sapphire Vapor-X. Some 7970s may be locked too. I know for a fact that current Gigabyte 7970s are...

OP - I'd just stick with the 6950 if I were you and ride it out until next generation adapters.

Generally the latest and bleeding edge products suck on price perf. Unless Nvidia launches GTX 700 products in the same time as HD 8000 and clearly takes a leadership position prices are going to be inflated on HD 8900 series. The rumours are the HD 8870 is a 1792 core chip with a 256 bit memory controller running at 6 Ghz and matches GTX 680 performance with launch prices at USD 280.

When the HD 7950 overclocks very well and beats GTX 680 OC I really don't see the point in waiting for HD 8870. For people who want a card faster than HD 7970 Ghz its worth waiting for HD 8900. For anybody else who is looking for a mid range HD 8870 , the HD 7950 makes more sense given the amazing prices and the very attractive game bundle.
