Durable, cheap, fast laptop for school and on the go.

Thread Starter
I need a laptop for school. I have three major requirements. 1. it must be durable. when I drop it (which I will) It won't break. if it breaks my information will be safe, it needs to take some abuse. 2. The laptop must be cheap, 600$ max. If it breaks I wont empty my bank replacing it. 3. it needs to be quick and light. I wont be using it for much more than working on word documents, email, and social / research activities. I want a good boot time.

The laptop doesn't need good battery life (3-4 hours if fine) My school has tones of places I can plug it in. It will mostly be running chrome and word.

So far I am leaning towards buying a (off-lease) Lenovo Thinkpad R400 for 350 from tiger direct, slapping a 64gb - 120gb ssd in it and running window 7 home premium.

I would like some input since I have never bought a laptop before (except a mac (not a real laptop), big mistake mad.gif ).
Thanks for any input

Google Chromebook

http://www.google.com/intl/us/chrome/devices/

$249 for the base model

http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/samsung-chromebook.html

Back your info up onto the 100GB of Google Cloud that you get FREE for 2 YEARS and you will never lose your info. And of it gets broken at $249 you can replace it easily.

That won't run real versions of office though. I would strongly suggest a recertified lenovo. Those things last like hell.

But it should run OpenOffice which allows you to do documents etc in Office file format. And OpenOffice is free.

I love lenovo laptops, or any business laptop for that matter. I like the R400 and SSD idea.

If you feel comfortable replacing the stock HDD with an SSD (I suggest the Samsung 830 128GB ~90 dollars) you'll have a whole world to choose from.
