Can I do anything to improve/prevent 1st gen 360's from RROD? - Page 2

i did my reflows with a heatgun. all of the videos i have seen out there say to use something in the range of 375f i think..
knew it wasn't going to be enough heat but did it anyways and the rrod worked for a few days.
jacked the heat gun to 1,000F blasted it for a few mins, haven't had an issue yet.
did the same thing to a ps3 i got for free.. nothing like getting two systems for free and fixing them with a heatgun and some TIM

thats awesome, the two I fixed I just did the trick where you wrap it in a towel biggrin.gif they still work to this day, probably could have saved my friends one with a heatgun, oh well.

So, I'm the same way with fixing stuff before it has a chance to break... now what exact steps do you guys recommend I do first? remember this is a non-rrod console so far.

the person you got it from, did they use it all the time or was it sitting somewhere collecting dust? I'm actually about to advocate the "if it aint broke don't fix it approach" if it was sitting forever though i'd switch out the xclamps/change paste/de-dust it.

Is there a way you can check power on hours with the console? If not I'd have to guess this thing was used pretty lightly and probably hasn't been used at all for at least a few months. She (my coworker) has a son that moved out some time ago and he was the primary user. So yes, this has probably been collecting dust for a while.

can you buy a "xclamp" replacement kit? I know all about thermal paste so that shouldn't be an issue re-applying and cleaning it out.

you can buy all the parts you need at lowes/home depot that link I posted tells you what to buy, they are just metric screws/bolts and some plastic washers. I even used metal washers w/ electrical tape on them (so they didn't short out) cause I ended up misplacing some of the plastic ones lol.

as for power on hours, don't think so....

In all honesty though if its a very old 360 that is still working i'd probably leave it alone at this point. Yea i'm thinking the if it aint broke don't fix it approach is the way to go bro.

IMO if a teen or young adult was using it, you'll want to dust it out.
i got mine around 28yrs old or so, and most of my xbox time was cod and netflix.
opened mine up and it was pretty dusty.

about the only thing i would do if it isn't broke is chop out the back metal mesh.. at max.
if it does red ring, you can pic up everything you need to replace the xclam at lowes.
16-nylon washers 5MM x 1mm lowes part #881544
8-hex head cap screws M5x12mm lowes part #880645

pop off the xclamp, remove the part the xclamp attaches to from the heatsink
clean off the old paste and dust everything out
heat gun it at 1,000f, and then let it cool (dont bump the board and use low fan setting on the heat gun)
pop on the washers between the board, heatsinks, and screws, slap it back together.
also the screws don't need to be crazy tight, just finger tight.
the main issue with rrod is that the xclamp bends the motherboard

thats how i fixed my rrod
the one that i use daily, i left the xclamp on because it didn't rrod, also didnt remove the thermal paste either.

Ahh good info, all of that including pictures is in the llama guide i posted btw OP....

I forgot about the xclamp bending the mobo which also leads to increasing the solder cracking/bad connection problem. The 360 is designed pretty terribly honestly. A great console, just poor design.

Second on the dust it out atleast, again refer to my first post with a link for the opening tool/star key you will need atleast the star key.

I won't argue with that. but it is their fault they decided to cool the console poorly, and use the terrible clamp design which helps cause RROD's. The fan is kind of a trade off, yes it cools much better running at its 12V capacity, but it also sounds like a leaf blower. biggrin.gif
