How can I have Minecraft install to a different drive?

Minecraft refuses to go to another drive because it always redownloads, the files to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft even if I put it on the drive I want it to install on, it still defaults to my C drive. I don't want Minecraft on my SSD since it constantly is writing and there isn't much of a gain for having minecraft on an SSD, can somebody explain to me how to get it to install on another drive? I tried to make a symbolic link but I couldn't get that working.

I use this for symbolic links: http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html

Download and install that.
  1. You close down minecraft.
  2. Go to your folder: C:\Users\Sean\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft
  3. Cut the folder and place it on to wherever you like.
  4. Right click the folder in its new location and select "Pick Link Source"
  5. Go back to the C:\Users\Sean\AppData\Roaming\ folder and right click and choose drop as symbolic link.

Just follow the directions, all you need to do is place it anywhere.

Thank you so much both of you! I went with Sean's method since it isn't exclusive to Minecraft and now that I am an SSD user ( :3 ) I will probably have to do this for other programs, thank you both of you!

I sincerely apologise for the thread necro, but I have the exact same problem, and I want to thank Sean Webster for providing a working solution. Kudos.

Now for my question: How exactly does the symbolic link prevent writes to my SSD? Doesn't the link update (thus needing a write on the SSD) each and every time the files are updated? Or am I misunderstanding how the symbolic works? Can someone elaborate on how this works?

it just redirects all files and changes to the new location before anything can be written or read. All your stuff that was once on the SSD is moved to the new location, what is left on the SSD is essentially a shortcut to the new location of what you moved.
