You might recall that Kaveri is the successor to the current Trinity chip, basically the next generation APU. The idea is simple enough, replace the Piledriver cores with Steamroller and replace the VLIW4 GPU with GCN, then tie it all together with a new uncore.Pushing out a chip to tweak it like this is almost always a losing game, but if done well, it can have better results than the original plan.

Considering a mid range CPU from either camp is more than enough for 90% of consumers, its not really gonna hurt them that much, they will still make and ship Trinity by the boatload, making money all the way.

But it sucks for us, who want to see innovation going ahead at ever faster speeds and ever larger jumps. I guess we lose out, which sucks. But I don't see AMD suffering much from this in all honesty.

Just because AMD says they're not competing with Intel on speed doesn't mean they aren't falling further behind. Just like with Piledriver, the delayed product just means what gets released will be that much more inferior. If AMD is going to skip 2013, skip Kaveri too and design something around what's next.

AMD is rumored to release a Trinity 2.0 APU with GCN and some HSA enhancements in 2013. It'll still use the same Piledriver cores though. Hopefully a new stepping at least.
