Guide deleted...

After doing more reading I highly suggest that if you feel the need to use UEFI that you do it from a clean install after you've read into the pros and cons.

Just go into you're BIOS and set it up to boot using UEFI and Windows install should take care of the rest. thumb.gif

As far as I know GPT should only be used for drives bigger than 2.5TB or is that rubbish? Also what am I looking for on manufacturers website? Is it a specific feature or can any UEFI pc run this as my pc has UEFI but it was one of the first pc's ever to get it :/

I found an option "Launch EFI shell from filesystem device" any idea what that is and how I use it?

When I did the upgrade assistant it told me "Secure boot not supported by your hardware".

Truth be told my knowledge about this is very limited, the guide came from posts from another forum in which I cleaned up a bit to attempt to make it easier to read.

I got that initial 2-2.5TB thing from a Microsoft book I had to study for college although after doing some quick research now I've found there is nothing bad about using it on smaller drives. The only problem with it is compatibility with older operating systems and its inablilty to be bootable from a BIOS machine, it has to be UEFI if you want to boot from it.

You can do some more reading about GPT here:

http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/w/wiki/2838.aspx

I'm definitely going to try this tomorrow and see how it turns out. UEFI + Windows, my mind is blown. All my life I would have never guessed that a 'bios' can integrate with an OS. New tech is so awesome biggrin.gif

However this is not the type of thing I'd do the way you suggested in this thread. To me this is the type of thing you sort it out properly and do a format for.

I agree, it makes far more sense to do it with a clean install. I'm going to delete the guide...

I would like to test the method out it will beat a reinstall for me. I just have to see what it is first and deicide for my self but now that your info is deleted I just left wanting to see it. I have a lot of time invested into my OS I rather not reinstall if I don't have too.

Wouldn't I be able to do a backup, backing up the Windows 8 partition. Then format the drive and reinstall windows 8 in UEFI mode. The go back and restore the original partition again leaving the UEFI partition in tacked and not restoring the old System reserve partition just basically over-writing the OS partition. Does that make since ? Would it work ?

Edit : just found this http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-to-uefi/
