Good Gaming Monitors Under $400? - Page 7

The three things that concern me are:
1) Premature failure/warranty (it would suck having to send this back to Korea lol)
2) Ghosting
3) Performance loss at 2560x1440 (can't imagine lower resolutions looking pretty on such a big monitor)

Just something to think about.

My current DC2T is out on RMA so I'm currently using my old SLI 1GB 460's @900 which puts them a nudge ahead of stock 470/ 560ti SLI but still far behind a 580SLI and with and with mixture of mostly highs (Shadows and med or lower depending on game ) and no AA I find myself playing most games @1440 mostly fine including BF3.

My card run out of vram before I run out of power in most games @ this res but with the extra 500megs the 580s have I think not only will you have enough juice to play everything fine aside from Skyrim/heavy mod games you won't have many issues with vram. Plus at this res you need MUCH less AA in games so even on my 7970 I only really needed 2XAA to make most games look great while running silky smooth so with your setup you should be more than fine going to 1440.

Remember games like BF3 don't "need" the vram but they'll take what is available, when I compared my 7970 and 460s @ my res with identical settings (highs mostly) the 7970 took an additional 350 megs of vram even though both ran well. If you look around the web you'll see the same thing with 7970's and 680s where the 680's are at the cap and 7970's will go over but they'll both not have any issues with vram, BF3 just likes gobble extra vram whether it needs it or not.

Power wise you'll have to roll back a couple of settings but the added resolution will make the games look better so it's a moot point, High 1440 > Ultra 1080 from all of my game experiences and it's not that close. So you'll have to roll back settings to get the game to run the same but the game will still look better, plus QHD screens look infinitely better and cheap nowadays.

My vote goes to a 1440 display, your cards will be fine. thumb.gif

I don't think I'm gonna go with a CatLeap after all, due to warranty reasons. Back to the drawing board rolleyes.gif

In many of the games the difference between high and very high is usually marginal to maybe noticeable for the masses , but can give 20-40% hit in performance which is why most don't use super sampling on The Witcher 2 or DOF on Metro. On top of the fact people's "Max" can vary from min 60fps to some that have move to a min of 120fps, I'd rather play something that looks great at 45-70 than something that looks a bit better but performance drops to 30-50.

So to reply to your post, it's not just you but you're in the smallest minority of the already small minority that is the enthusiast gaming market. Single high end GPU market (7950/70 and 670/80 + Dual card) which I belong to is small to begin with, and I really need a second to max out BF3, but in the dual configs you guys really love your eye candy! tongue.gif

Oh if you decide you want one of the multi's don't let people dissuade you, it's a good monitor and the "lag" isn't really that bad. I finally got a chance to look at the multi (Catleap not Overlord) and unless you're a pro gamer or used to playing on a 120hz screen the ms and slow pixel response isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

So far out of 7 people who play anywhere from 20-80 hours a week playing games only one has been able to notice my screen was 120hz and he was the one who bought the multi for his PS3/PC and he can tell it's not as fast on twitchy PC games (L4D, TF2, CS, ect) but almost no difference for consoles or stuff like The Witcher, BD2, and BF3 (his rigs avgs 60-120+ @1080p depending on game with max settings).

I would say the majority of PC gamers wouldn't really notice the difference between the multi and SE and he multi has dvi, hdmi, dp, ect, and SE regular version only has one dual link DVI so you trade a little bit of speed for more functionality with those extra inputs.

but i'm that way because i'm bought so much junk trying to save a buck... i'd just rather buy used quality products than new low end stuff.
