Hello OCN, I've been a lurker on this site for quite some time now and have finally made an account recently. After going through a lot of these builds and mods I have decided to work on my own case.

I chose the name Flip-Side for this build for the sole reason that I basically plan on flipping my case around as if it was viewed in a mirror. This means that the motherboard tray with be in a R-ATX position and the window/mesh panel of the case will be on the opposite side.

Case before strip down.


Power supply and Gpu installed.


*Tilt head 90 degrees* Everything on the motherboard side.


Front of the case, with the two dvd drives and a fan controller.


Side panel with mesh and 200mm NZXT Blue LED fan.


Other side panel, nothing much going on here.


My cablemanagement work. The side panels on this case dont allow for much room behind the motherboard tray.

The Plan:

  • Change DVD drive LEDs to Blue
  • Paint DVD drive's bodies white
  • Remove motherboard tray
  • Clean up inside of case (Possibly remove some of the HDD trays)
  • Possibly cut out a window on the mesh panel and put acrylic there
  • Sleeve power supply
  • More???

With my current budget, which is basically non-existent, I won't be water cooling on this build. Especially since I am saving up for a new graphics card now that my 460 has had its run.

If you guys have any ideas on some more things I can do with this case feel free to let me know smile.gif

*Note: I apologize for dark/blurry pictures. I have steady hands with everything but cameras...

So I stripped my case down to the bone and have started working on the DVD drive's LED, since it's late and I can't go painting now.


First DVD drive taken apart, ended up cutting my self on the metal lol


First LED to replace, but the board is attached in a way that I can't remove it from the general casing, so I'll have to work around it. (Not like that will be that hard)


Second drive, this one was far more cooperative

This board comes out, and you can see the LED to be replaced



Soldering the new LEDs

Will post more when I can. I plan on actually starting the motherboard tray sometime tomorrow.

Started to disassemble the chassis today:


Removed the front header, will be sleeving these cables later on.


Stripped case before I take it apart.


I might end up taking either the hot-swappable bays out or the HDD bay above it for more room, since I don't use them.


Separated the base from the motherboard and back side.


Also removed the top.


Mock-up of what it might look like when placed back together. Notice how the motherboard tray has been flipped.


Cpu now at the bottom.


And graphics and power supply at the top.


My only concern right now, is that I don't want the PSU up top blocking the GPUs and the 2 120mm fans. I will have to either cut the motherboard tray and back panel and re-position them, or find somewhere else in the case to put the power supply. In the front where the hot-swappable bays are hmmm?

Did some more work on the case but didn't get a chance to start painting the DVD drives and fans today.


Majority of the rivets popped out.


Only things left together are the HDD and SSD drive bays and the motherboard tray and back panel.


The bays taken out, will probably leave them out when I put the case back together and just use a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter for my HDD.

Mock-up with a spare power supply to show what it would look like if I put it in the front.




So If I placed the psu in the front of the case, I could use the opening from the hot-swappable bay (with some cutting to make the opening bigger). I'm not sure how I will deal with the cables if I did this though.

I'm going to have to see what other orientations and places I can put the power supply, and if I will have to end up cutting the mb tray and back panel.

Hopefully going to start work on painting the DVD drives and start on some fans as well tomorrow.

Once I stripped down the case of the plastics and parts, I drilled out the rivets holding the metal frame together. It almost seems like they intended the mb tray around to be flipped, as there are holes already in place for rivets.

I basically turned the bottom piece around, so that the power supply would be up front. The front and back panels are in the same place, but the back panel is flipped upside down. I left the mb tray attached to the back panel, so that flipped as well giving us the R-ATX layout.

Took apart one of the fans to test painting on it.


Three fans that I plan on painting. I might also do some more if I like the results.


First victim.


And the blades removed.

Tapped up the parts I didn't want painted, i.e. the LEDs and the motor, then moved onto painting them and the DVD drives.


Painted the frame black and hung to dry.


Finished painting this fan and put it back together. Turned out alright despite my terrible painting skills.


And the fan on with LEDs.

Conflicted on how the blue light look with the painted blades. Might just do the casing in black and leave the blades clear.
