PSU for 24/7 Server/HTPC Gaming Build

Thread Starter
I'm almost done getting all the parts for my HTPC build except for the power supply and the motherboard.

This HTPC will be used as 24/7 media server, but I also plan to game on it when I get home.

CPU: i5 3570k
Motherboard: Undecided
RAM: 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series
GPU: None for now, but I want the PSU to handle something like a GTX 680
Blu-ray drive: LG GGCH20L
HD: 5 x 3TB Seagate Barracudas in RAID 5 + OCZ Vertex 3 for OS
Case: Fractal Design R4

My main requirements:

- Modular
- Quiet
- Efficient since it will be on 24/7
- Cool

I saw a deal on slickdeals right now for a SeaSonic X750 PSU. Not sure if that's overkill or good future proofing. I just want to make sure 750W is not too much power since it will be on all the time.

Any quality 500 watt PSu can handle the above system. (you'll need a lot of connectors though lol).

PSU:
-Rosewill Capstone 550watt Modular
-PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 500W Modular
- Seasonic 560 Full modular
- Antec EA-650 Platinum 650 (not modular)
- Kingwin 500w Platinum (Fanless but pricey)

As for mobo:
- Sniper M3
- MAXIMUS V

I like it a lot. For its price/features/oc'ing, it's hard to beat. I only had it for a month and very satisfied with it and the oc. Its a bit thin though (PCB). One thing I noticed is the booting, its soooo fast, much faster than any other board I owned eek.gif

Yea, I just saw a video on YouTube of it booting Windows 8 and that was ridiculous.

So regarding the PSU, from your recommendations, it appears 650W is pretty much as high as I should go?

Do you know if I get 700W for example, more power will be used and it will be less efficient? I found this one on sale today.

General rule of thumb: Power Supplies are usually most efficient around the 40-60% usage area.

If you want max efficiency, find the most efficient PSU line you can find (Seasonic's platinum series is a good place to start), find their efficiency curve and it's most efficient point.

Now use a PSU calculator to figure out how much power you are likely to need.

Assuming you are planning on using this machine pretty heavily, pick a PSU from the series that you found, where the max efficiency is about 20-30% lower than your maximum potential draw. (that's assuming your computer is 70-80% maxed out on average, adjust to compensate if you feel this is not your typical usage pattern)

Hopefully you get the idea. I need to go pass out for like a week now. Been up way too long.

IMHO, your proposed system may pull 450W at 100% load OC'd to hell. So a 750 would be at it's sweet spot for efficiency, i.e. half load. It should also remain quiet, if that maters.
Without the OC a 550 would be fine.

Thanks fellas, appreciate the help.

The platinum series is a little out of my price range. What do you think about the Gold series I linked to in my last post? It's going for $100 right now.

You could go with a 1500 watt PSU if you want and it won't use more power than a 600w or 700w PSU. (it might use less cause PSUs are most efficient @ 50% load, but only by about 1-2%)
IMHO, get the best PSU you can afford (its what I do).

However, a quality 500w PSU can handle a 690 not just a 680.
Check this monster out and whats powering it:
