i3-2120 Budget Build

Thread Starter
Hi there,
I just made my account here on Overclock dot net. I hail from New Zealand (which unfortunately means I can't use Newegg without insane 3rd party shipping costs mad.gif )

Also sorry in advance if this post is in the wrong section.

Anyway, I've been looking at an abundance of computer parts for some time now, lurking through old posts, videos etc trying to find the best 'bang for my buck'. I can't find exactly what I need, so I'll ask here myself.
Basically, I'm sick of my awfully slow computer and I want to finally upgrade to an 1155/AM3+ platform. The rig will be primarily for videogames - Battlefield 3, WarZ, stuff like that. No video rendering or massive multiple threaded applications. I'll be going to university in a year and a bit, so future proofing isn't a big deal at all.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the following:
i3-2120 $135 NZD (holy crap best deal ever)

GTX 460 (I already have this.)

Probably an H61 or H67 mobo. Need suggestions please - do want 6GB/s SATA3, USB3.0, SLI capable etc. GA-B75M-D3H $118 NZD

8GB of 1600MHz G.Skill Ripjaws RAM $89 NZD 4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz $35 NZD

BitFenix Shinobi Mid-Tower Case $115 NZD

CoolerMaster Hyper212 CPU cooler $59 NZD Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Plus $10 NZD

Crucial M4 128GB/Samsung 830 128GB $150 NZD

Cheapest 1TB+ 7200RPM drive I can find. Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB $95 NZD

Before I was looking at an AMD build, with a Phenom II X4 965 on a GA-990FX-UD3 mobo. Is this a better idea? If so, why? In what situations? In New Zealand this will probably be more expensive than the i3 build.

Please help me decide, Overclock dot net!
All suggestions are welcome, at this stage the only thing I have is the graphics card so an entire revamp of my build idea is definitely possible.
If you look at my sigrig, you'll see how badly I need the upgrade....

Cheers in advance,
Narwal biggrin.gif

Hey! Welcome to OCN!

The CPU choice is a bit of a tough one as BF3 really benefits from having a quad core, especially in multiplayer. The i3 should have a slight performance lead in most other games though. You're going to have to decide how many games you plan to play that would actually benefit from the presence of a quad. Some users report bottlenecking from AMD processors with higher end single GPU or multi-GPU configurations though. Do your research and arrive at your own conclusions tongue.gif

First of all, while most of the HXX boards will have the PCI-E slots to run SLI/Crossfire, it is not recommended to do so as the lanes are x16/x4. You really want to have at least x8/x8 to ensure a smoother multi-GPU experience. What CPU you choose above will determine what mobo you end up picking to pair with it.

For the ram, pretty much any entry level 2x4GB kit will do, you can even drop to 1333 and save a few bucks if you like.

I noticed you didn't include a PSU, do you already have one on hand?

From what I've seen, as far as a budget gaming processor is concerned the 2120 is the best one (I have one and it works fine)

If it is possible, maybe look into the Ivy Bridge i3, they have some really good prices (but maybe not in your area)

Good luck, and I hope everything works out.

I noticed you didn't include a PSU, do you already have one on hand?

From what I have seen on NCIX Tech Tips, running their i7 with 2 cores disabled (2 Cores w/ HyperThreading, same as the i3) only changed BF3 average FPS by about 3-4 which honestly I don't care about - To me, at least 30 is fine.

I have also heard that about the AMD processors - This is why I was unsure.

So do you suggest I get a Z68/Z77 for the mobo then? I don't mind paying up to $220 NZD for the mobo. $180-220 was my ideal range.
EDIT: I found these
http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=599/ID=17470/SID=916816678/productdetails.html
http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=599/ID=17477/SID=916819817/productdetails.html

Both have 2 8x PCI-E lanes. Which one is better?

With the RAM, will I not notice any difference going down to the value 1333 tier stuff from any 1600 "gaming" ram?

And yes, ATM I have a 430W ThermalTake PSU which goes fine. If I upgrade to SLI, I will be getting http://www.playtech.co.nz/afawcs0139235/CATID=590/ID=16524/SID=168207082/productdetails.html

It's about $40 more expensive for the Ivy Bridge i3-3220. Worth it?

If you don't intend to run SLI, then I wouldn't bother spending the extra money to get a Z77 board. A B75 or H77 board is going to work just as well for what you are trying to do. If you are looking to save some money, you can also drop the Hyper 212+ and just use the cooler that comes with the CPU - that'll be fine for stock speeds.

Well I don't assume I'll be able to get a solid framerate on Battlefield 3 running all Ultra (probably AA off, or at least post AA off, HBAO off) with only one GTX 460, so would I need to SLI? From what I've seen in videos, going SLI with the 460's will up FPS by at least 15 depending on the game.

Here are 3 sim~builds, the first one is dual core non OC & non-SLI around $900, the second one adding an extra $100 you got a quad-core cpu but still non overclockable & non sli setup, the last setup is Quad-core but OC & capable of SLI setup, only thing is your going to add an extra $400 to get all the sweet feature. Hope you got an idea based on above setup, playtech/pbtech-nz

I don't know if it's worth it to get the Z77, do you absolutely have to run SLI down the road? You're trying to stick to a particular budget so if we start adding this and that here and there before we know it we'll have tacked on several hundred NZD in upgrades, going completely above your original budget. The thing with the NCIX benchmark is that it's done in single player, which is far less demanding on a computer system than multiplayer. This post has links to some very useful information showcasing GPU and CPU usage in a multiplayer scenario. Obviously the results aren't 100% replicable since there's no static environment in MP ever, but it's still a good reference for what you can expect.

Just to let you know, I have to play on medium with SLI at 1920x1200 with AF/AA/HBAO all disabled in order to get a smooth 60 FPS everywhere for multiplayer. In smaller maps I can get by on high with occasional dips to the 30s or 40s, but I typically play medium just to get a smoother experience. Didn't bother with single player ever, so cannot speak on its performance with my system.

This particular article illustrates the performance differences in gaming with ram sets from 1333 all the way up to 2133. You can scroll to the other pages to check their reference system as well.

Is SLI 460s going to have the VRAM to run BF3 in Ultra? I wouldn't think so, especially if they were the 768MB models. If you want that kind of settings, you'd be better off budgeting for a 7870 or something instead.
