Prime95 problem with FX-4100

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, 5 days before i built a rig and today i was testing the CPU with prime95 somehow the temperature goes up to 68C (Stock Cooler) and after 15 minutes computer shut down itself.
On CPUZ-ID the core speed goes for 1404 mhz to 3712 mhz. When running primetest 95 it went from 3311 mhz to 3612 mhz. I didn't changed anything on motherboard. I set it to optimized default. I am very new to AMD CPU and OC'ing.

AMD FX-4100
Asus M5A97 R2.0
Corsair XMS3 8gb - 1600mhz
PSU - Corsair CX500
Cooler master Elite 310 ( 2 x 120mm fans - 1 blowing out on rear and 1 blowing in on side)
Seagate 250GB
Galaxy nvidia 9500GT.

It sounds like a bad seat on the heat-sink. Get some thermal paste (MX-2, Arctic Silver, Shin Etsu to name a few) and re-seat the heat-sink.

thanks *ka24e* that worked. I applied cooler master v1 ic value. Now prime95 running for more than 1 hour and the temperature is constant around 63 to 64C. But the core speed changing from 3612 to 3311 mhz and multiplier from x18.0 to x16.5. Is it normal?

That's not a bad temp, considering its the stock heatsink and fan. The core speed changing is normal. It's down clocking itself when it's not at load to save power and produce less heat.

If its dropping while prime is running then it could be throttling, but if I recall the max temp on the FX chips are in the 70*C range.

yeah I am using stock cooler, and the difference is while running prime95 only. On running prime95 it goes from 3612 to 3311mhz. How do I fix the throttling? Thanks

That is strange. I did some digging here on OCN and found THIS

I would try disabling "APM" (Advanced Power Management) and see if that clears up the problem.

Disabled APM on CPU Configuration that solved the issue. Thank you very much. One more question i am planning to get Asus HD 7770 1GB DDR5 Graphics Card. How much Power supply i need? I am thinking of Corsair TX 550w.

with no overclocking, you will be fine with your current. I owned a HiS HD 7770, things sip power.

No actually i am planning to overclock the CPU.

You may be running it close, it kind of depends on how much power you need to run your 4100 (as in how hard you push it)

If you get a quality 500w PSU you will have nothing to worry about.
