First time laptop/notebook buyer

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just looking for some help.

What is your maximum budget?
Hard cap of about $2000 but I would rather spend less if I can with my goals (should be pretty easy I assume).

What country are you in?
Australia

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Mainly web browsing, watching videos and etc, light gaming. I have a good desktop but this is one I will use for chilling in the loungeroom with the family.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Nope.

What screen size do you require?
15.6in or above would be nice. A larger screen size would be a good reason for me to spend a little more money.

What screen resolution do you require?
Not sure. I would like 1080p but does it make much of a difference at the smaller monitor size?

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
I would prefer new.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Not too fussed, will probably be plugged in all the time.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Mostly just small indie games that aren't hard to run, doubt ill run any FPS or anything.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
None, Linux is fine.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Not really fussed.

How much hard drive space do you need?
500GB atleast.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
No.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I have used other peoples laptops (non-techheads, regular joes) and they tend to freeze a lot and are slow. Not sure if its cause of bloatware and needless installations or not, but I want something that is fast and simple tasks/browsing.

I would prefer if the laptop could be bought from the website I link below, but if I have to buy anywhere else for a good laptop/notebook thats fine.

I was thinking this one as it looks like itd do the job:
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1013&products_id=21956

But then there is this one with 1080P which would be a plus:
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1013&products_id=21811

Not sure if ill notice much of a difference at that screen size.

Just remember I have very little knowledge in the mobile market.

Thanks for any input guys.

I knew it was better in general, but would it be worth it with the things I will be doing with it? Also does MSI make good laptops?

You really don't need to spend even a grand on a laptop for general use and light gaming. The laptops you listed are capable of running many modern PC games at high settings, and you don't need that.

You don't need a Core i7 processor or discrete graphics to play your light indie games, you really don't. The computer's you used from other people were either really old or filled with bloatwware, malware, fragmented files and folders, huge amounts of left-over temporary internet files, etc.

Most ordinary modern laptops are capable of running your light indie games. Core i3 processor and Intel's HD graphics are the most you will ever need. A laptop like this you can find new for $500 or less.

So please save yourself some money.

And for your question about 1080p, it usually makes a difference for laptops at least 15.6", which is what you're going for. On smaller screens not so much.

That site doesn't seem to have a lot of options (most of those laptops are in the thousands of $). Have you tried looking at other sites?

Thanks for the input mate, repped.

What about the higher specs for longevity, so I don't have to buy a new one for a while? Part of me really wants that 1080P too.

I am going to buy other things from that site anyway so I was wanting to go there, its one of the best in Australia for computer parts.

Yes, but the future requirements for web browsing etc. will not change significantly, meaning a lesser computer would still have the same longevity and save you money.

Unfortunately 1080p screens are usually found only on high-end laptops. Unless the computer model you get has a 1080p screen part you can install yourself.

For longevity unless you want to use the same computer for a decade to browse the future web and play future indie games I don't think it's necessary. It should last maybe 5 years or so if you're just web browsing and playing light games. Besides who knows if Linux will continue supported drivers for a 10-year old computer.

Edit: For $500 or so you can get a deal on a laptop with a Core i5. Core i3 laptops you should be able to get for $400 or so with no difficulty, or $300 or so with a deal on one.
Whiskerz, I think you could definitely get away with something less than what you have linked, if I had my choice between the two, it would be the MSI for sure.

I don't agree with a $500 laptop, a $400 laptop, or a $300 laptop... You get what you pay for... I bet every one of those slow laptops you used in the past were REALLY old or, a cheapo... People tend to go with the cheapest thing they can, and wonder why it sucks... You get what you pay for. If you can afford a little more its worth it.

I think its worth springing for something with a GPU of some sort, I've NEVER been a fan of the integrated graphics, but I also haven't used much of the new stuff, my wife has an older i3 based notebook and the integrated gpu blows, things have come a long way, but still.

I think a 1080p screen is totally worth it on a 15" notebook, 1366x768 is the other common resolution in that size, and after having one, and switching to 1080p, its so much better. less scrolling, sharping image, etc...

If you wanted to save some cash, but still get a solid notebook, look into something in the $800-1000 range, although I don't know how prices are in Australia.

I would also make sure that you're not going to want to play FPS' while watching tv in the living room, I went down that road a long time ago, and figured out I did. I had my desktop, but wanted to watch Sunday football on the couch... and play video games while I was at it. I bought a middle of the road to lower end notebook and it sucked... wasn't until i got something with some decent horsepower that I was happy. You may be different, but I started out with the same intention of playing older/low performance games, and then wanted more and wanted to upgrade pretty quickly.

I've found that buying a laptop in the $1100-1300 range with a GPU similar to whats in those notebooks or just slightly better works out best for me, you're getting good screen resolution, good gaming performance, and portability at a reasonable price.

You have set yourself at a limit of $2000, you don't need to spend that for what you're looking for, I just think you shouldn't skimp out for a couple of hundred dollars.

Thanks for your input guys, repped.

I ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 17R SE, bigger screen and better specs for less as it was $400 dollars off and I just had to jump on that deal smile.gif

Spent less money than expected and got a better laptop.

Also I don't expect to play FPS in the living room, my desktop has its purpose, it can max what you throw at it and I wouldn't settle for less.
