I've recently seen a ton of news relating to the expansion of ARM processors moving into the server field. That got me wondering why the current computing market (mainstream at least) is saturated with x86/x86-64 processors. Besides a lot of backwards compatibility, does the x86/x86-64 instruction set offer any advantages that ARM or any other types of processors offer?
I've heard that, despite ARM's supposed power savings, that it is not that efficient if it were clocked as high as some of the x86 processors. Is this true?
