Help with water-cooling a hd 7970 ghz

Thread Starter
Hi guys, would love if u can help,
I was recently just trying to fit the Razor XSPC waterblock on a Sapphire Vapor-X 3GB HD 7970 Ghz edition card, and i encountered a problem. The Sapphire EZ OC button was getting in the way of the water block... frown.gif. Now should I solder off the switch and fit the graphics card and risk it not working - and if it does, not work, will I be able to solder the switch back on, and it goes back to working?. Or do I simply just re-install the Vapor-X cooler, and just give up on water cooling the graphics card - dislike this option >.
Thanks krthush

Probably best to trade the card with someone.

I probably won't be able to return the xs-pc block - as ive already unboxed it fully and even cleaned it using isopropanol (so there maybe a few marks hear and there). Also probably won't be able to return the card as its been taken apart. I just want some solid evidence of whether the oc ez switch is actually an important component, as it is meant to be an "add on feature," so am wondering if it could be removed.

I definitely wouldn't start soldering on a gpu as it may become unusable and will void your warranty. As someone else replied I would try and trade the card or block for something compatible or sell one and buy a new or used one.

Then again i have been thinking of another solution, I could maybe do an exchange (exchanging the card) with the shop i bought it from - I believe they will be more persuaded if I still get a product from them - and get some reference HD7970, use the water-block on that, then flash the HD7970 to a Hd 7970 ghz? Either way I'm probably gonna sit on it for a few days until I can figure out the best option, your guys opinions shall help a lot!

Thanks for all the help so far dudes, I'm really pissed by this problem XD, planned everything except for a freaking switch! I think i'm going to just swap the card for another one if possible, save on the hassle of soldering - it will probably end me up with more problems the way this is headed >.<, but thanks a lot dudes.

I would dremel the block before the gpu. Worst case sell the block and buy the one you want.

The thing about cutting the water block, is that i might risk puncturing the hull - as i don't know the innerworkings of the block - and so rendering it useless. Where as with the GPU I can always just solder the chip back on.

Open the block, see how thin it is in that area. If its not that thin there take a dremel to the bottom then dremel out a area the button can fit.
