Why does everyone recommend intel core I7 over the xeon series which tests higher?

I would really like to know as to why the xeon isn't sought after for gaming when the benchmark says it is better.
Because it's normally so much more expensive.

For gaming? no need for more than an i5.

Aren't the Xeons locked anyways ?

What do you mean by the xeons being locked? And I noticed on the benchmarking site that there's a couple xeons that are higher up than the I5-3570. And they are a bit cheaper, that's why I was wondering.

"Locked" as in locked multiplier = cannot overclock very much.

yea sure they may be cheaper than a run of the mill Non k 3570 but not a lot of motherboards support xeon processors, plus when you do get around to the "k's" they would just overall be better than a xeon.

For sure. I guess that those base numbers don't mean as much as if they were modified for overclocking.
The Xeons are a good choice for those who don't overclock and don't want integrated graphics since they have Hyperthreading while being cheaper than locked i7s.

Xeons are great processors since you can get the performance of an i7 for (almost) the price of an i5 (for Ivy Bridge, you need to get at least the Xeon E3-1230V2 since it's the lowest model with HyperThreading). The main reason it isn't recommended is because it doesn't have an unlocked multiplier (none of the Xeons do IIRC) which basically translates into no or very limited overclocking.

No integrated graphics on die could also be a plus. smile.gif

Because you can overclock the i7s by 1000Mhz or more;thereby making stock testing irrelevant.
