A persistent error when installing from USB media: "AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no...

This seems to be related to anaconda, but I'm specifically getting it while installing Fedora 17, using the full DVD x86_64 iso.

This is the same error I am getting. I verified checksums, I am in the process of seeing if it happens with the alpha of 18. After that I'll be seeing if I can swap a DVD drive in and install from that, since one person mentioned success with that method.

I installed Fedora 16 on my laptop from a liveUSB, but not on my desktop.

Anyone have any thoughts, suggestions? I already submitted it to bugzilla.

Dunno, I'm on F17 that was installed with a USB. Everything worked fine, the install was smooth and it runs very well. I'm impressed as to how up to date they keep everything too. So far it's been on of the best distro's I've tested in a very very long time.

Sounds like it might be something not configured probably in the udev rules. But I'm only guessing here

I'm not sure either. But I finally borrowed a DVD drive and it installed fine.

Might be a mishap in the installer work with certain drives. That's unfortunate too, at least you got it running (and so did I smile.gif). I personally love it, don't like their build system however so doing custom kernels is a PITA in my opinion. Nothing like what Debian/Arch/Gentoo/Slack have in niceties. Though it's not too bad once you get it set up, just dunno... I don't find it as smooth. I do however like how you can take rawhide srpm sources and it'll compile to system and label the packages for your current version. That's how I do a bunch of my stuff, it's how I did my nvidia drivers for the 310 updates.

I've never given Fedora a try. Don't know why, but for some reason it's one of the few distros I've never tested.

Worth a look?

It's worth a look, but you may not notice much, depending what you normally use. One difference between Fedora and other distros is that Fedora won't include anything that is proprietary. You must add additional repos to install proprietary codecs, drivers, etc. But that's very easy, because I always add the rpmfusion (free and non-free) repos every time. I use GNOME3 and like it, much to the chagrin of many. Another big deal will be their desire to include Wayland in most likely 19, but possibly 18.

You may be interested in some of what they offer:

Fedora 16 large changes:
GRUB2
HAL daemon now removed in favour of udisks, upower, and libudev

Fedora 17 large changes (at least to me):
Inclusion of Gnome 3.4 desktop, offering software rendering support for GNOME Shell
Updated to latest KDE Software Compilation 4.8.3
A new filesystem structure moving more things to /usr
Removable disks are now mounted under /run/media due to a change in udisks
systemd-logind replaces ConsoleKit, offering multiseat improvements
Inclusion of the libvirt sandbox; virt-manager now supports USB pass-through
Services now use private temp directories to improve security

If not, I don't really see the point of distro hopping unless you dislike your current distro, or love exploring. I've used Fedora for 10 years, tried Arch, Mint, Ubuntu, and didn't see a reason to switch, so I've stayed.

Thanks for the informative post

I mainly use Arch on the desktop, so used to get updates quite quickly, but the lack of non-free would annoy me to be honest. off topic, but I've never really seen the point of that level of FOSS elitism.

Just because it doesn't ship with non-free doesn't mean you can't install them easily. I wouldn't necessarily call it elitism, since it actually does serve a use, they don't just thumb their nose at proprietary software/drivers. Fedora invested in improving the nouveau driver, and it works so much better than it had prior to that. Red Hat and Fedora put time and money into improving FOSS options so there isn't only a proprietary option, which may work well, or poorly. It's all about the option.

Not including drivers nor software simply because they're proprietary is pretty elitist in my opinion. Much like how Apple were being elitist when they refused to support Flash.

I'm not disputing that Fedora / Redhat contribute massively to the FOSS ecosystem nor am I saying that such elitism doesn't have it's place. I just prefer not to see it on my desktop (after all, I run Linux because I'm sick of vendor lock ins and walled gardens, so I have no interest in imposing an arbitrary set of restrictions on Linux)

'Options' would be developing FOSS solutions while still supporting proprietary ones as well.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have issue with philosophies like Fedora's. However that doesn't mean I have to share their views either.
