Yeah but IBM didn't really try and compete by making x86 compatible hardware. That's what I ment, at the moment IBM is still worth more than Intel by a very large margin. I'm just saying they do have the money to throw down on R&D, they just don't have the need at the moment. They stay alive and apparently they do it very well. Check out the stock, the 08' dip didn't set them back nearly as much as other companies. In fact, it's almost like they never got set back.

To be honest this isn't a surprise. The demand for faster and faster desktop CPUs was going to slow down anyway, but the adoption of tablets and large-screen smartphones has only hastened it. These days, the most taxing thing 95% of people run on their PCs is Flash video, and even tablets can run that perfectly well. Many people have no reason to upgrade their existing machine or to perhaps even buy one in the first place when a 10" tablet will do just as well.

Certain markets will require ever more horsepower, such as HPC, databases and VDI environments (especially VDI), and Intel's server and desktop cores aren't that different from each other (CPUs have to be highly generalised), and even though the server and datacentre markets are growing the growth isn't fast enough to make up for the slowdown in the consumer market(s).

However, the tablet, smartphone, settop box and digital TV markets almost exclusively use ARM-based processors, and those are the markets which are growing right now, even in the midst of a global slowdown.

All of this ^

Desktop market is shrinking and will continue to do so. Mobile market will continue to grow. Add to the fact that most consumers with a desktop made within the last 2-3 years really have no reason to upgrade because software and general tasks aren't that demanding.

Only the enthusiast and workstation users even utilize a good amount of today's cpu power, and these users make up a small amount of the overall demand. I think I read in a Win 8 thread recently that part of the problem of the "slow adoption" rate of Win 8, was because people weren't buying pc's. No reason to upgrade, if their machines still work fine.

idd thx to consoles.
Most games right now are cheap ports of the console games out there.
Al that is added to the pc platform is what a "like say" directx 11 can add to the game.

Probably. Also, didn't they say Haswell is only supposed to be 1% faster than IB? Or was that just a rumour?

I don't know about 1% but it's not going to be much.
