Is This a Good Router and Modem?

Hello guys.

Well I decided my router has reached the end of its life after seven years. Comcast even told me it is time to get a new one so I did some research.

I saw that the ASUS RT-N16 was recommended many times:

I don't know whether a modem makes a difference for internet speed at all, but currently this is the most recommended one by Comcast:

I currently have:

Two PC's upstairs

Four iPhone's

One laptop on the first floor

One PC in the basement

I plan on putting them in my room which is upstairs. Would range be no problem? My walls are kind of thick but I don't think it'd be an issue.

As far as the modem is concerned, what modem do you have currently. What speed tier do you have for internet?

As far as the router is concerned. Its a little open ended from my perspective. Haven't had to deal with one of those lowly ISR's in a good while.

My current modem is ARRIS TM402P/110, I brand I have never even heard of. Main reason I want to get a modem is so I can stop paying $7 a month for renting.

As for the speed tier for Comcast, I have Performance.

What router would you recommend?

I cant really say I have a recommendation for a router.


Your bandwidth requirements however don't require anything over Docsis 2.0.

The only real difference between Docsis 2.0 and 3.0 is the ability to bond QAMs. Each downstream QAM can throughput around 38mbps and if you don't exceed that you don't need to use more than one QAM channel.

You can find the black surfboard 5100 series for $20 used, they are some of the best for reliability and have a very forgiving tuner.

For guys like me and my 105mbit plan I require the use of 3 bonded QAM's. Doscis 2.0 does not deliver.

If I went with a stronger internet plan would I then require 3.0? I have been told 2.0 is 10+ years old and it is time to get a 3.0.

3.0 just bonds the channels used for downstream data together. Since each QAM is roughly 38mbit, if you get a plan over 38mbit down or 10 upm then its a requirement.

docsis 2.0 is still 256qam so you can easily get up to 38mbit download.

If you plan to purchase for the future, the modem you linked is also a very good one but is limited to 4 channel bonding.

( int his erea, we are getting ready to roll out 1GHZ plant which means we will have room for 8 channel bonding. I am excited. )

I probably won't upgrade till I move out and find my own place, so I think I'll just get the Docsis 2.0 for now.

That modem is docsis 2.0 only so it does not support the channel bonding.

It will be limited to download speeds around 38mbps and upload speeds around 10mbps.

300mbps is coming soon but those 8 channel modems are very pricey. Once the 8 channels become the norm, the 4 channels will drop in price. Everyone speed tiers will increase without pricehikes ( or so it usually happens ).

For now docsis 2.0 is still more than enough for most speed tiers.

I have basically the same setup you listed in the OP, and it's been working well.

I'd also say it will likely be cheaper in the long run to simply get the 3.0 device now.
You have a while before speeds exceed the ~160 mbit ceiling for that modem.

Also, based on the smallnetbuilder review, the RT-N16 tops out at around ~140 mbit for WAN<->LAN routing.
That'd mean you will likely be replacing both devices at the same time (nix on any failures), whenever you have a bandwidth package > 140 mbit.

It's a decent router if you only need a single band AP, mine's been going strong since 2009.
