Brand new high end computer overheating

Hi everybody I just bought a lenovo y580 laptop, it's got a geforce gtx 660m, and it's overheating when I play games. The games run fine, but the computer heats up quite a bit for how powerful the video card is. I've updated the video and chipset drivers and had the heat sink replaced but it still heats up.

Specs:
Intel Core i7-3610QM 2.30GHz 6MB Cache
Windows 7 Home Premium
8GB DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX660M
HDD 500GB

Is it overheating or just getting really hot? Laptops with decent video cards will get pretty hot. It's not really overheating unless you get artifacts or performance issues.

Unfortunately that is almost the nature of the beast with gaming laptops. Is it locking up due to heat, what are your temps ?

 

Have you it on a cooling pad ?

OP overheating is not subjective - overheating means either performance is impacted due to the inability to dissipate heat, or the computer is crashing/artifacting/etc due to overheating. If your lap is uncomfortable, set it on the desk.

My laptop gets up to around 87-95C(volt modded and massivly overclocked.) but that is normal because it is a 260m and its max heat is like 115C. You should not even get near these numbers

The computer is not having any performance issues it's just getting hot, not so hot that it burns my hand but pretty hot. I thought with a good graphics card this shouldn't happen but I guess this is normal?

Yeah that's normal. Good graphics cards actually make things get hotter then poor ones.
