Upgrading PC - Advice needed - Page 3

Ok. So why do they sell 16gb packs as 4 x 4 if there is no advantage (but actually disadvantage it seems as you lose the remaining slots for no reason) and there seems to be more of them?

(I don't do much video editing or gaming but no harm keeping the other slots free for future if the need arises, if there is no advantage in 4 x 4GB).

Local store has them in stock I think (and cheaper), is it the same thing? https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory+-+RAM/DDR3/Dual+Channel+-+%281600MHz%29/16GB+%282x8GB%29+Corsair+Vengeance+Jet+Black+Low+Profile+1600MHz+CL10+DDR3+Dual%2FQuad+Channel+Kit+%5BCML16GX3M2A1600C10%5D+?productId=52474

I don't think my new system needs low profile but I guess there is no difference for me?

Because LGA2011 has quad channel memory controller... and 8 dimms total.

That RAM has higher timings.

Right okay, I've just looked up to the two different motherboard numbers, the LGA2011 boards are a lot more expensive that do quad channel and they are out of my budget and probably out of my need too. Is that a newer type of board that will become the norm or is it a higher grade LGA1155 for those that need it?
LGA2011 is a platform for people that need the maximum performance, and they will pay for it. Thus, it's that expensive, but only Intel platform with more than 4 cores. LGA2011 also supports 32 PCI-E lanes compared to 16 on LGA1155.

For some time now Intel had two platforms.

In 2010 - LGA1366 for high performance and LGA1156 for mainstream
Now, LGA2011 is basically replacement for LGA1366 and LGA1155 for LGA1156.

Next year we are going to see LGA1155 replaced by LGA1150 (Haswell).

So generally you either want best performance for money on LGA1155, or the fastest CPU on LGA2011.

Great okay - 1155 is fine for me, useful info though. I had a look at H77 but I'm not really saving anything over a Z77 (some are more expensive) in the ones that I can find (selection seems much smaller). Shall I just go for that MSI then as there cannot be disadvantages in a z77 if not overclocking right?

Quite cheap here: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-z77a-g45-intel-z77-s-1155-ddr3-sata-iii-6gb-s-sata-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-dvi-d-hdmi-atx

Nope, same as H77 + OC capabilities. G45 seems the best motherboard for your need with UK prices. Even with the USA prices, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H is probably worse choice for you since it has worse audio codec, but better VRM which isn't important for you. AsRock Z77 Extreme4 would be also a good choice if it had the same price as G45 like it does here in the USA.

Anyway, G45 seems a board to go.

Great! The G45 is cheap at that particular website. Not to keen on AsRock as I had one a couple of years ago that fried (and only had one year warranty I recall).

Okay, here is the upgrade:

MSI Z77 G45
Intel i5 3550
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz 16GB (2 x 8GB)
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB
Cooler Master 690 II Lite
Windows 8

Existing parts I am keeping:
Crucial SSD M4 128GB
Sapphire 5670 DDR5
Antec 430W power supply

Don't think I have any more questions but will ask if any come to mind.

Thanks! The assistance has been indispensable.

ithink if you have that many apps open then running an i7 is worth a thought...
surely an extra 4 threads would help running multiple apps, i7's are actually tailored more to your use than gaming, i5 is more of a gaming chip imho
also yeah extra RAM without a doubt, sorry to throw a spanner in the works... thumb.gif

EDIt also which browser do you use? just curious as i find chrome takes more advantage of a discrete gpu than IE explorer does, thus taking load from cpu

I use Chrome as I find it to be quicker and easier to locate history (explorer is hopeless when it comes to browsing history).

i7 is unfortunately out of my budget. They are ridiculously priced if you ask me, and that's probably due to AMD's failure that has allowed Intel to gain a monopoly over the prices they charge.

Which is the cheapest one? If I go for it, I will really be stretching myself. Would I also need to change the motherboard then from the one selected above?

Also, on the Windows gadget, my current CPU is stable below 10% so would I even need it?

hmmmm dont wanna push ur budget if you dont need to. main pob 1st is ram and youve addressed that well.
if you went i7 that mobo is fine. but if its only @ 10% you may not need it.. maybe try some better monitoring to check cpu level cos no way would 10% be max with all.that running try openhardwaremonitor.exe and chack max cpu usage during all this. also chrome is a great choice cos ur gpu will take over for flash and other video duties smile.gif run some test and let us know smile.gif sorry to mix things up... just seems logical more apps running requires more threads. although test 1st as i5 migjt be sufficient smile.gif sent from phone asholding my newborn smile.gif so sorry for wording and spelling
