Power Pins and MOBO Question

Thread Starter
I have been building my own rig yesterday, and have wondered about something.
Are the power pins on the motherboard, in this case a Crosshair V Formula Z, meant for what they are labled as?

-For example, the top of the MOBO has a 4 pin power labled CPU FAN, is it okay if I put a case fan on it instead?

-Also, does a 3 pin connector work on a 4 pin "port"? (and not vice versa)

-The mobo comes with a disc, which I'm assuming is for its bios. When I start up my rig for the first time, should the windows dvd or the bios be in the dvd drive?

No CPU fan is for the CPU cooler, but any three/four pin is interchangeable.

If you are water cooling use it for the pump.

Use the disc if you need for example RAID drivers whilst loading your choice of Operating System, otherwise restart and then insert driver disc , but the latest versions will be on the manufacturers website. ( Including any BIOS updates ! )

The 4pin fan headers are just there to be used with PWM fans, so that you can control the speed of the fans. 3 pins can't do this. Yes, you can put 3 pin fans on a 4 pin "port". If you put a casefan on the CPU_FAN header it will just be controlled ( so long as it is 4pins) in relation to the CPU temperature. If cpu temp increased, that fan will increase.

Okay thanks.

Also, are power supply cords interchangable as well? I bought an Antec HCG-750w, but did not know that the outlet end of the cord was triangle based, like the 3 metal "heads" were flat towards the center. Could I use the power cord on the PSU on this comp and switch with that one?

What do you mean? Use the power cord which came with your power supply as that is made to fit it.

Yea, except the outlet part of it that you plug into the wall or the set outlets (i forgot the name) is like a triangle instead of 2 vertical metal heads and a round bottom part.

So the power cord doesn't fit into any of the outlets in my house / set outlet thingies, so there is no way I can use it.

So you have a UK power plug? Does it look like:

Then yes, just use a different power cord if you have one, or buy an adapter. Where did you buy your PSU from for it to come with an incorrect cable? headscratch.gif

All 3 metal heads of it are flat, but the top 2 face towards the center, while the bottom one is vertical in the center.

I bought it from newegg.

I'm trying to post a picture.

EDIT: There.

So I guess its a chinese cord?
