New X850pro having problems

Thread Starter
Hello all, I'm new here. I just purchased an ATI X850pro AGP from Newegg and installed it Wednesday. Thursday I did the 16 pipe unlock successfully with the help from this site's posts. Everything seemed to be working fine until I started playing Civcity today when all of the sudden there were tons of artifacts and blocks all over the screen. I immediately got out of the game and the screen was still corrupted. I restarted the computer and to my horror, the POST screen was also blocky!!! I have since reflashed to my backed up bios and it is back to 12 pipes but it didn't help any. is there anything I can do to fix it? Please help!!

Thanks!

It sound like you really screwed up your card. Try RMAing it.

Yeah, there must have been something wrong with that one. I got the same one from the same place last week, and I flashed it wrong 3 times...(2nd time I had all sorts of artifacts everywhere), so I flashed it again and got it with the fan control. I haven't had any trouble since. Did you try using DriverCleaner to make sure the card is clean before flashing back? Maybe try it. What did you have your core and memory set to anyways, just curious?

I only had it running at 520/540 since it was on the stock cooler (no ram sinks, etc.) I ran drivercleaner, took the card out, put it back in, reflashed using the 16 pipe x850pro bios and it cleared the blocks until I opened the 3D portion of atitools (which oddly enough did not say there were any artifacts although the whole screen was riddled with them). You think maybe it was the bios and I should try another? Thanks

Thanks, RMA is filed, just need to ship it back. I was so happy too that I had the 16 pipes, 1.6 memory, etc. Think it was overheated or maybe bad pipes? I'm afraid to try this mod again once I get the new one.

Well as RMA seems the most safe best make sure you did the below method in SAFEMODE also :

Installing Graphic card driver efficiently!!! When you Update your graphics cards drivers theres ways that you should go about it. Follow these simple steps below.

1.Download and install ''Driver Cleaner'' Here:
http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html
2.Uninstall your Current Display drivers such as your ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' drivers.
3.Now run ''Driver cleaner'' and depending on the Drivers you have you will have to select either ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia'' from the drop down menu. Only select the main title of the driver in the drop down such as just ''ATI'' or ''Nvidia''
4.Once you have selected Your driver click on the ''Start'' button and this will now start the driver cleaning process. ( Do this twice to be sure )
5.Now reboot your system and Download the latest Nvidia or ATI and go ahead and install them.

Doing this avoids driver corruption and conflicts so you can now enjoy smooth gameplay.

If ATI Tool didn't register artifacts, do you think it could have been something as simple as bad seating of the card in the AGP slot, or maybe even a lose VGA or DVI connection?

I don't think so, although I wish it were that simple. I reseated it a couple times and even tried 2 different monitors. same problems. When I popped my old 9600pro back in, it works just fine so I don't think cable or seating is the problem. When I said atitools didn't say there were any artifacts, I meant that it didn't say there were any but I could barely read it through all the garbage over it and the rest of the screen. I did notice the card got up and over 90C whenever the 3D box was open. I'm thinking it just burned itself out. Kinda annoyed that a stock cooler can't keep the card cool sufficiently even with a minor OC.
