What can I do with this hardware I have sitting around?

Thread Starter
I've been browsing the FAQ's etc in this section for a bit, but I'm still curious as to what I can do and a general way to do it.

I've got an M4N78 Pro sitting in my closet, has on-board video, 8800gs I believe. I can pickup a Semperon or Athlon for it pretty cheap, and I've got 2gb of ram for it I believe.

I've got (3) 2TB WDC Greens, 64mb Sata 6, that even though the board doesn't support Sata 6, these drives make the most sense to put in it over the mis-matched 1TB's I've got.

Everything else for it, case, Corsair 400w etc.

Basically, let's just say I've got:
  • Dual core AM2+ PC
  • 6TB of storage
  • 8800gs
  • U-Verse fiber as my provider
  • Digital collection of Blu-Rays
  • A PS3.

Let's say I want to:
  • Store the Blu-Rays on the 6TB, and watch them on the TV
  • Also watch the Blu-Rays on any computer on the network
  • Record the same shows that are currently being recorded by the provided DVR
  • Still be able to watch TV or my recorded shows on other TV's in the house
  • Store other media and non-media files for other computers on the network
  • Slide shows of pictures or other home-made movies created on networked PC

What I assume I need via searching:
  • Dual tuner PCI card, like the Hauppage or w.e. with the IR Remote
  • Possibly some PCI card from ATT that they come install in my PC?
  • Install Windows 7 Ultimate to do all this? Maybe even Windows 8 since the UI might be more "friendly" for this type of application?

I've got an ATT U-Verse modem/router that also serves the land line we have. I have a PF-Sense box setup, but can't use it I don't think with U-Verse because of the Phone Line?

With them all on a network you shouldn't need any special card. Just some lan software such as homegroup to do the sharing.

Use that dual core processor and other inexpensive bits to create a file server or HTPC. All you need then is an inexpensive Ethernet Hub and you will be able to access the files from any home computer in your household once you set it up on the network.

What else would 6tb of hdd be used for?

An adequate current generation card should be available pretty cheap +/- $100 depending on where you are.

fold?

According to Newegg the mobo supports am3. might be easier to come by than am2+.

I have a gts450 that I am trying to sell, but if the 8300 (thanks for the correction) really won't cut it I suppose I can switch to that.

I've got a few switches so everything is on the same network, I assume that's what you meant by hub.

But that part I could also just do with my own PC and the 6tb inside it, and with the right format stream to the PS3.

So I'd want it to be quite a hefty all in one machine type thing to make it worth while.

The GTS450 will be great as a Video Output. Especially since it has HDMI Output on it.(I assume). I used mine as Video output to my 42 inch plasma for a while.

As for your hard drives, I would setup a windows software raid, or get a raid card. It would drag you down to 4TB useable, but I would rather not lose 2 TB of bluray rips just because I didn't prepare/think ahead. It might be beneficial for you to buy another hard drive of that model, getting your 6 TB useable, and make a 4 drive raid. I went a different route as I have a small HP microserver with my 2TB drives in it. My htpc only has a 60 GB ssd for win7/programs and XBMC. It's all up to you though.
