Phenom II X4, what motherboard ?

Thread Starter
Hello,

So on another topic i made, xd_1771 told me that my board is not good for overclocking, and it could burn or whatever. So i decided to buy a new motherboard, which should be compatible am3+ and be good/safe for overclocking cpu and eventually overclocking ram.

I run a phenom II X4 965 and my Budget is 100€ or less.

Thanks in advance.

Asrock 990fx Extreme 3 is good for casual overclocking. I'm afraid you will have to reach deaper into your wallet if you want a motherboard with heatsinked 8+2 phased vrms.

Refer to this list for all am3+ motherboards. You should be looking for at least 6+2 phased vrms which are heatsinked if you want to overclock much.

i don't like to be the guy who suddenly barges in and suggests something wayy different than what the OP is saying but I'll do it anyway

what do you use your computer for btw? is it only for gaming? I suggest just sell your cpu and motherboard and get an i3. a few days ago I made a thread about this and was unsure if I should do it. alas I did do it and the performance in gaming was way different. I had a very outrageous bottleneck on that system (it was paired with a gtx 670) when I switched to the i3 2120 even if it's only at stock performed A LOT better than my overclocked amd cpu. the funny thing is I didn't even spend a single cent on the upgrade/sidegrade. just throwing my 2 cents in man.

to answer the question just a get a cheap asrock 990FX board. price:performance they're the best and they're beefy enough for overclcking. the ram guy speaks the truth about low end MSI boards. get rid of it asap. they have zero vrm protection unlike asus and gigabyte.

I mean i can buy a motherboard that costs 150€ but problem is, i'll have to change the mobo in like 2 years maybe for new cpu because of socket?? And whats the biggest benefit of putting 150€ in a motherboard ?? Does it make my pc performance really better??

sadly performance will be identical. you do get more features/better overclocks with a more expensive motherboard

No but it's better for overclocking like you said you wanted to do before. If you get a cheap mobo you're overclocks will go nowhere and you risk damaging the vrms (voltage regulators) if they are not heatsinked.

Okay, to answer your post. I bought this phenom II x4 965 like 2 weeks ago, i didn't expect to have to change motherboard otherwise i'd get an i3. But now it's too late, also i'm happy with my current cpu performance. Works very well in BF3 smile.gif

Also, i heard that intel is often releasing new sockets, so i'd have to change mobo+cpu often......Never mind.

So i'll go with a 100€ motherboard. So the Asrock 990fx Extreme 3 is best i can get for this price, right?

AsRock extreme 4 990fx is only $150 and has 8+2. supposedly with the 990fx you won't have ot change the motherboard in 2 years it's supposed to be compatible with future cpus that's untill they make new socket even then AMD is pretty good about forward compatibility. I bought my extreme 4 planning to not upgrade it for several years.

Performance would be the same if all things were left stock. But the things you get with a more expensive board besides better overclock features and etc.. is a better build quality and that in turn results in a longer lasting product for years of service vs months or maybe a year or two if your lucky .

that is a thing of the past tho. intel has great support nowadays. an entry level h61 board although it doesn't support overclocking and has limited features it does support both sandy and ivybridge i7's and quite possibly even haswell.

dyou just purchased your cpu a few days ago so it's best to stick with it. get the asrock 990FX board. although the power phases in numbers isn't that impressive, it does have beefier vrm's so even a phenom II x6 at max overclocks would be more than enough for it. no sense of getting a much more expensive board. it would be just a waste and not worth the money imho
