Going to get first smartphone, will it work with Linux?

I am going to get the Nokia Lumia 820 (cyan) for Christmas. But the thought just crossed my mind. Does it require me to have a version of Windows for putting files on the phone e.g. songs, and updating the phone?

Please excuse the noobish question, but this will be my first smartphone so really do not know what to expect. I run Xubuntu.

With Windows Phones, there's a very heavy reliance on the Zune desktop software for updates, syncing, and such. They're not Linux friendly at all unfortunately. Have you not considered an Android phone?

I have not.

I like the look of the Lumia, it has decent features for a decent price and the color (cyan) won it for me. Zune eh. Is that not some music app that MS developed and ten ditched a few years ago? Or am I being mistaken?

I will look into Android phones just now. Thank you.

if you get an android phone IT IS linux based. It will work perfectly with windows/linux honestly don't get a garbage windows phone...

i have a $80 (was on sale) LG android phone from radioshack that will do anything you need a phone to do....

I'd look at LG they are a great phone/anything with a screen like tv's monitors etc company. They make pretty good home appliances I've heard too.

I agree.

I have a $100 Boost Mobile ZTE Warp, actually works quite well for the few apps I use it with, honestly haven't tried anything in the line of games though, but it's a phone so... meh.

Cheap, get's the job done, and it works on any computer I may come across. thumb.gif

I haven't had a Windows phone personally. I did have an iPhone 3G, not S, and an iPhone 4. Early this year I had a mishap and shattered both screens. I ended up getting an HTC Vivid. I'm not sure of your provider or location but in the US it seems that AT&T is currently offering the Vivid for 50 USD with a 2 year contract. I have enjoyed it a great deal. Just another option if you consider Android.

I have a Lumia (work phone) and it's easily the worst smartphone / PDA OS I've ever used. I actually prefer the old Windows Mobile platforms over Windows Phone.
