new win7 pro and samsung 830 external drive not being read but for device manager

I have a wd 80gb drive external plugged in it shows up in device manager not explorer
I was going to try a backup but its also invisible there and auslogics defrag
new to win 7 showed up last week in xp
help

Go to disk management and give it a drive letter.

before I got replies I ran troubleshooting it said
could not find device enumerator
how do i give the drive a name ?
it has all my original photos on it
I would love to get them and also I cannot get backup to complete on my internal hdd it goes about 2/3 and locks up
I want to make a backup on external drive
