Deathadder, Spawn, G400 Comparison

Hello everyone, first time poster here. I have now come back to gaming on the PC from the console gaming scene after about 5 years, I missed playing games on my PC because that is where I started playing games many years ago. I mostly play FPS games on the PC so I decided to get myself a good mouse. I came to this website and saw three mice I liked. I could not decide which one to buy so I got all three. Deathadder BE, Spawn and the G400.

I have used each one for about 2 weeks now and have almost made my mind up on which one to use. I just use all three mice plug and play style on windows 7 64bit, I do not want to mess with drivers and software, I like to keep it simple. The only thing I did was to update the Spawn to the latest firmware, version 62, but still no drivers or software. I have 2 mouse pads I alternate between, the Steelseries QcK and the Razer Goliathus control.

I would like to give my opinion on all 3 mice after I tested each one for 2 weeks. This is not scientific in any way and is only the feeling I got from using each mouse day to day. Tracking wise all 3 mice are excellent. As far as I know they all use a very similar sensor and I would say it is a draw between them as far as tracking is concerned. Left and right click buttons on all three are also very nice.

Of the 3 mice I think the G400 is technically the best by a small margin. It has low LOD, tracks on almost any surface, good build quality, more options for on the fly DPI settings and has a great price as well. That being said, it is my least favourite of the three. I wanted to like this mouse but the shape is a deal breaker. I can not get along with the shape of this mouse. If this was my only mouse and I had to make it work it can be done, but I have other choices and they are much more comfortable to me. If I have to nitpick, this is the most boring looking mouse of the three.

The Deathadder is a great looking mouse and performs excellent. The feel of the mouse is also very nice, the black edition has a nice smooth exterior. If I had to nitpick I would have to say build quality feels a bit lower than the other 2, the LOD is the highest of the three, the scroll wheel is not very good, the bottom drags a tiny bit on soft cloth pads but is fine on a hard desk and lastly, no on the fly DPI settings without software. But I have to say the back and forward buttons on the side feel much better than the other two mice.

The Spawn is also a very nice mouse. The shape looked weird but when I tried it the mouse felt great. The build quality is excellent and the mouse feels very sturdy in your hand, on the fly DPI is great and the red is also a nice change from the usual black mice. Again, if I had to nitpick, the LOD is high, the Spawn branding on the side is a bit much and it felt like this mouse was the most picky when it came to surfaces. But overall it is a very high quality product at a great price.

After my testing, I am stuck between choosing the Deathadder or the Spawn. Although they are very different mice in shape they both work great for me. I may keep both and just alternate between them every week or something. Please feel free to ask me any questions or give your own thoughts on the 3 mice, I always love to hear what other people have to say. Here are some more pics.

Thank you very much for reading and have a nice day.

Nice post, thanks for sharing. smile.gif
What kind of grip do you have, claw? Palm?
Do you have a large hand?

Thank you.

I use a fingertip grip. My hand is normal size.

Excellent post.
Thanks.

I also happen to alternate between exactly these three mice.

I also hate the shape of the G400, and also agree that it is technically the best of the lot (probably the best mouse ever made, technically).
Shape and weight just does me in.
Even worse is the DA. I would settle on the DA if it weighed 30-40g less. Its just so awfully heavy. Shape and feel is pretty good for me otherwise.

The Spawn has to be held completely differently than the two other mice. For some people, this might be great.
I don't like the shape either. But its lighter... which makes up for a lot.

I just want Logitech to make the MX310 with the G400 sensor, and I'll buy 50 of them, and will never have to worry about mice ever again. biggrin.gif

All great mice, sensor being the strong point in each.

My only recommendation would be to pick a darker surface. The 3090 sensor combined w/ lighter/whiter surfaces will prohibit the sensor to perform to its fullest potential.

I have the g400 and it feels great although it is not suited for claw, it is great for palm.

@dontspamme:

That's amazing that you have the same 3 mice. All 3 are great if you like the shape.

@CMCarter:

I use a black surface for the Spawn, a Razer Goliathus. The Deathadder and the G400 work fine on light or dark surfaces for me but the Spawn works better on the black pad for me.

I personally couldn't use the deathadder and g400 because of their weight

I have G400 and Spawn. I like Spawn more for RTS games because it's light and main buttons are really great for fast clicking. Spawn is excellent built mouse, materials are great and it feels very solid like you said. On the other hand I like G400 more for FPS games, mainly because it has great 400 DPI and half the LOD of Spawn. It's weird but I feel like more weight actually helps me to aim because it's easier for me to stop the mouse exactly in a spot where I'd like it to stop (head of the enemy of course wink.gif ). Spawn has great scroll wheel, unfortunately this part is way worse in G400. Shape is very different, and it's hard to say which I prefer more, but I think G400 is more relaxing for my hand. I like both mice and I'll keep them.

Well, black is not black in this case wink.gif Sadly the spawn hates the goliathus control :/ , you will not get a good malfunction speed on it. With spawn I always used qck+ heavy. This only matters if you play low sense ofc.
And here is my Opinion on those 3:
DA:
I tried to love the Deathadder for a long time now, it is plugged in right now, but I always switch back to another mouse cause it is just a huuuuuuuge brick in your hand and i prefere smaller mice.
Sensor is very nice ofc.

G400:
Hate the shape, maybe because I am a lefty playing on the right hand and my right hand is not as flexible or something. Performancewise it is nice.

Spawn:
Shape = Love it or Hate it. I loved it BUT you gotta be carefull with the spawn. You gotta be lucky though not to get a spawn with the button malfunction thingy smile.gif
Cord could be more flexible, but they already learned from their mistake and made a good cord for the recon.
I don't use it cause apparently CM Storm hates 400dpi smile.gif I know I could go lower on windows sens but then it is not 1:1 anymore AND I wanna be able to use raw input ingame so it this wouldn't work anyways. Biggest problem is that you can't set your low sense ingame with 800dpi in maaaaaaaaaaaaaany modern games cause proggers are retarded :/
