Thread Starter
I know this has been done to death, but I am looking to upgrade my current Twin Frozr II 6870 to a 7970, or 7950.

I am going to have some money rolling in soon so I'm going to spend the left-overs on well needed upgrade. I know that the 7970 is the flagship AMD card but I want to know if it is REALLY worth the extra cost. I have no problems spending money on a superior product. I keep reading however that the 7950 is VERY good bang-for-buck, especially if you get one that has been stock-overclocked. I want to hear from actual people who have or know actual everyday useage of the two cards. I don't really pay attention to benchmarks they don't tell the whole story.

So just some outlining things---
I don't plan on crossfireing. I don't want nVidia I already have an AMD eco-system. I DO NOT overclock GPUs at ALL it's just a rule (CPU's I'm fine with). I plan on using it for gaming primarily, things like....
BF3 @ 1920x1080
Crysis 2 @ 1920x1080
Total War Shogun 2 + Empire Total War @ 1920 x 1080 (maxed settings)
(and soon) Assassin's Creed III @ 1920x1080 max settings

I'm currently looking at these

MSI R7950 Twin Frozr

i'm in the same boat too. Currently deciding either a 7970 or 7950. a 7950 is roughly 75-150 cheaper depending on which 7970 you get, but with the new driver and being able to overclock to 7970 performance somewhat it seems like a steal between 250-300.

i was in the same spot but i went with 7950 because it gives me 85~90% of a 7970 but 200 dollars cheaper. thumb.gif
post #4 of 38
The performance gap between the 7970 and 7950 when overclocked is much bigger than any other gap, like between the GTX 680 vs GTX 670 or an HD 7950 to a HD 7870. Definitely go with the 7970 if you can find a good deal.

However, with those games, settings, and resolution, the HD 7950 should handle it without any performance issues.

Depends if you have to have the best or not, the difference probably isn't worth the extra 100 bucks, but for me personally, I could never buy the second tier card knowing I could have gotten more performance for a bit more money

I'm in a similar situation and seeing as how the op and I both have a phenom II x4, I was wondering if there would be some bottleneck with a 7950. I have mine at 3.7ghz. I play at 1080p.

I would go with the sapphire vapor x 7970.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202001

Pretty pricey so might be the best choice as a free gift lol. But as far as my research has shown me has the best stock performance and great overclocking ability

Better CPU's might help with CPU intensive games but they should be mostly fine at 3.5+ you shouldn't really worry about it unless you go SLI/CF.

On topic though, a good aftermarket cooled 7950 > a reference 7970 since odds say either they'll both hit the same clocks and the TFIII will be much quieter with around the same performance for much less $$$.

*Edit* Crap if you're not OCing then there's not really a point with going for a 7950 over a GE 7970............ I change my vote to a 7970 GE as the clocks will be much higher at stock this one for $400 I sure love those GB coolers! tongue.gif
