You're single monitor 1080p, get a 7950 and spend the extra on an 240-256GB SSD which you should have already.

i own both 6870 and 7950, so i know firsthand each card's capabilities. the 7950 doubles fps in every game i played using the phenom as a quad. get the 7950 and the savings can be put to upgrade the rest of your rig.

or follow 2thAche's advise.thumb.gif

EDIT: found an old run prior to 12.11 drivers . . .

You're not doing it right or something. I overclocked over 50 different graphics cards, as high as 375MHz over stock with voltage increases, never had any go bad.

Your HD 7950 will fall in between these two (closer to the HD 7850, especially at stock):

After reading reviews and benchmarks, and comparing a couple of cards I think I've reached somewhat of a conclusion. I have narrowed down that the card brand will be XFX. Only because the Double D Black Editions of both the 7950 and 7970 get rave reviews and are highly overclocked by XFX. However against what seems to me to be many smart people giving be wise advice I am still leaning towards the 7970 DoubleD Black Edition ===> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150586 <===

I have the $$$ to spend and I think that investing an extra $75 for a TOP Tier card. And that out of the box, it puts shame to various GTX 670, and even some GTX 680s! The 7950 is some cases is a direct competitor (at least to me) to the GTX 670.

The other thing is that I don't like to "settle" on something that is adequate, I wait until I can get something that is a little more than what I want. That way it will end up being a long-term thing like my old IceQ4 4850. I had the card for about three years, and now it lives in my parents build which has been running now for about a year and a half. And the thing has work perfectly without ANY problems. I plan on keeping this current card upgrade for 3-4 years. I have to admit my Frozr 6870 was only a stop-gap for DX11 gaming and Eyefinity capability.

More feedback would be much appreciated, oh and BTW.....the card that I linked above is $399.99 after rebate w/ 3 free games. Now that I my opinion is awesome!!!

You won't be overclocking correct? If so, the 7950 doesn't put any of those mentioned cards to shame. Stock for stock, it will be about ~12% slower than a 670 and ~21% slower than a 680.

You should reconsider overclocking because that changes the entire scheme of things. If you change your mind, I would recommend something other than XFX

Because the last two AMD launches have been buggy and overpriced because they launched the cards too early, and then Nvidia blows them out of the water by patiently releasing a similarly powerful product later the same year with much more software stability. Then after the Nvidia cards are released the AMD software is then stabilized and then the $$$ drops. Then they release a new series of cards 8 to 14 months later and repeat the process over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over....

The reason for the upgrade now is because I'm no longer happy with the performance of the Frozr 6870 and I want play games in Eyefinity very now and then. And also I have the financial capability to upgrade now. And the 8000 series cards aren't due until Q2 of 2013....that's MAYBE February of next year, and that's supposed to be the mid ranged 8870/8850. The higher tier models aren't supposed to be released for a few months afterward (1.5 to 3 months). And the 8000 series release is all speculation in terms of performance, price, etc.

I just realized I spent all that time typing to say that you buy the best that you can when you want to / feel comfortable to. Be happy with it, and then upgrade in 3 to 4 years. And only because the cycle of computer leapfrogging has been going on since the dawn of the computer and will go on for as long as computers exist. And that if you always wait for the next "version" to come out, you will always wait and never actually get that product.

Thread Starter
Yeah I've made up my mind, I'm going to get a 7970, which one though...I'm not sure. My friend has had bad luck with current XFX cards

To shoot off an opinion on the NEW thread, here it is
http://www.overclock.net/t/1326276/alright-new-decision-to-make

Thanks for the opinions, I need more though (if you don't mind)
