A strange story about coil whine in my PSU

Thread Starter
I have a HX 750, 1 year and a half now. Just recently about the least 2 months, ONLY when I play games. And ONLY if I'm in the loading screen/menu. My PSU will make a screeching noise that I suppose is coil whine. But it is so strange that it only happens in games, only in loading screens and menus. Like for example in Killing Floor, the load times for games are so quick, it'll make a brief screech sound and then go away when the map is loaded.

To add on to that, it's not every game, I only noticed it in all STALKER games, Killing Floor, I think in GTA 4, that's all I can name for now.

And to make it even more strange, today when I was messing around in STALKER Clear Sky's option menu, when I click a drop-down box, the screech noise changes pitch, and sounds deeper, but once I let go of the drop-down box it goes away.

I don't know if anyone had this before, but can anyone relate? Or give a reasoning behind all this?

Are you sure it's not your 6950? Coil whine during games is common in graphics cards.

Definitely sounds like GPU capacitor whine if it's only when gaming.

I thought that too, but I'm almost positive it's coming from the PSU.

My 6950 does it when playing Halo CE and when I mine bitcoins. Other than that it doesn't make a sound in any other games I play.

I hear a whine in Heaven at the very end, after I close my score window. It's the credits screen I think, fraps reports something like 4000 frames and I get a whine.

Usually loading screens have higher frame rates than when you're ingame which causes the GPU to coil whine under heavier load. If youre certain that its not the GPU, then probably because the GPU is demanding more power from the PSU, its causing it to whine. Have you checked voltages?
