Silver question

Thread Starter
Going to use pure distilled water (just watsons distilled drinking water) in my loop. I've heard of silver kill coils but I can't find one from any suppliers near me. I happen to collect .999 silver coins, would putting one of them in the res suffice?

Kind of a weird question I guess, but I'd rather not add any additives to the water.

Maybe. I don't think it would be as effective as a coil though and there's always a possibility of it being sucked into the loop if it's too small. You could always destroy a few silver coils or ingots and make your own coil. Why not just order one online or see if a store will special order one for you? You could also look for silver wire, jewelry stores or a music (guitar/piano) store might have it.

The amount of silver you will get from a jeweler will be much higher too, so you could always use it for other things or add a bit extra for good measure. Coins might also block the flow now that I'm thinking about it.

I ordered silver from a local jeweler at which point I learnt a lot about what is considered pure or near pure.

99.99% is nice looking silver, but you truly want 99.9999% (forget if it 3 or 4 decimal points) at this stage it is not medical grade but harmful enough to water that I had to sign a health warning disclaimer biggrin.gif

Medical grade is even more pure then this, but typically things are only coated with such a high grade of silver.

Getting silver from a jeweler is a pit pricey as they do not like ordering small amounts.

P.S. Distilled water is not good for you to be drinking as well, so I guess if it is labeled as being drinkable, it is not properly distilled.

Silver doesn't need to be absolutely pure to be effective as an antimicrobial agent so a .999 coin should work fine. The main downside of using a coin rather than a coil is the comparatively lower surface area of the coin (particularly if one side is on the bottom of the reservoir and so not doing much).

Distilled water is fine to drink, but you probably don't want to drink it as your only water source - it lacks minerals such as calcium and magnesium which are an important part of the diet. Distilled water also doesn't really taste that nice - its pretty tasteless (it's those same minerals which give water taste).

Says pure distilled water, no minerals or bacteria, agree it might be bad to drink though.

Yes. But the main reason you should not drink distilled is because over time it will become acidic (carbonic acid), especially when exposed to air (CO2).

I think a coin has a higher surface area than a kill coil, most silver coins have a 40mm diameter, plus 3mm thickness. Silver coins are also the same purity as silver kill coils, .999. The other .0001 percent or whatever is just to make the coin harder.

Probably could work, better than nothing I guess.

distilled water is not recommended for drinking as it will cause imbalance in the chemistry due to diffusion. For silver coins canadian mints have the highest purity of silver of all major mints thumb.gif
oh and it will work. there has been people who's even dropped silver dollars and quarters into their loop
