UD5H---DEHD?!?!?!?!?

Thread Starter
My Z77X-UD5H appears to have burnt out! I installed an LED strip on a toggle switch. I was booting up and turning my nice new LEDs on and off, when I noticed my system was dark!

At first I thought it was my power supply, since if I turned off the power supply for a while then turned it back on, the motherboard light would blink on briefly then go out. But J. Harris over in the PS forum helped me test it, and... NOPE! PS is fine!

Going back to the mobo, I tried pressing the reset button... each time I press it, the mobo LED blinks briefly, then goes dark. I think my motherboard is fried! doh.gif

Is there anything I can do? How could an LED strip cause this?

Did you test PSU with multimeter?

When CM sent me faulty PSU replacement, same thing happened on my board. So I wouldn't exclude the PSU yet. Try a different PSU first if possible.

You connected LED strip directly to PSU, didn't you? The only way motherboard would die in this situation is if PSU shorted and killed it.

BTW did you manage to get sound on Mac OS?

Yeah, I tested it with a mulitmeter. All the pins had the correct voltages (more or less, I'm using a $5 wonder from Harbor Freight Tools tongue.gif)

And yeah, I connected the LEDs to a molex. I guess the working theory is that turning the LEDs on and off caused a voltage spike in the power supply which fried the motherboard?

This mobo has always been a little odd. I don't know why this would've happened in the first place, nor do I know why the PSU would test fine with a multimeter yet the motherboard won't POST... ?headscratch.gif

What was odd about it? If it has given you problems previously, maybe it was defective in the first place.

Atm it's guessing game really. It's either your motherboard, or PSU.

you try unplugging the PSU from the wall and holding the power switch in (PW switch hooked to mobo) this will drain residual charge in the capacitors.

Atm it's guessing game really. It's either your motherboard, or PSU.

I would frequently have to unplug and replug my USB peripherals on boot into Win7 to get them recognized, and I've been having sleep problems in OSX. The hackintosh community has a lot of UD5H folks, but I seem to be the only one with this problem, so...

Also, tweaklauncher would frequently spit a bunch of errors, even with all drivers installed and updated, and just not work. So it's always been a little off.

I'll try that and report back. I guess I should also try removing the CMOS battery...

The sleep problems could depend on what version or source of OSX you used (can't discuss here) and or the revision of the motherboard or even a hardware problem.

IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!!!!!1

EDIT:

Yep, it's back! Thanks!

I cleared *all* the capacitors I could, holding down the system power button, then taking out the CMOS battery and shorting the socket. Whatever it was, worked.

I also wrapped the leads to the switch in electical tape, in case it was arcing that caused the problem.

Here's a picture with the case as normal:

As you can see, a utilitarian case. The IO ports can be hard to see, so I installed the LEDs:

Very useful! I'm grateful to everyone who helped me get it working.
