Which CPU & Motherboard would be the better choice?

Thread Starter
Just would like to know would there be much performance diffidence between these two. I'll be using this to play games and record them also will be using eyefinity.

I7 3770K
MSI Z77A-GD65 Z77

Total Price $534

VS

i7-3820
Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3

Total Price $516

What would be the better choice?

The question you have to ask is:

1) Will I use my rig for gaming, surfing, etc. (The usual stuff)

2. Will I use my rig for rendering, multi-threaded apps, etc.

If the answer is 1 stick with the z77... obviously if the other is the answer stick with choice number 2.

EDIT: Just a thought, would you want to be stuck with an unlocked CPU with the X79?

No I won't be editing on this rig

But I would like to play games like arma 2 with triple monitor and I'll do a little bit of overclocking in the future.

No real reason to get an x79 if you won't be putting a 6-core CPU and 3 or more graphics cards.

Both are overkill for gaming but I'd go with the 3820 simply because with an X79 motherboard you will be able to upgrade some time later to an Ivy Bridge-E processor thumb.gif

I think that answers your question... overclocking with the Z77 rig is better since the x79 you've posted can't be OC'd because of the chip not being a K series (limited). As for multi monitor any 670/680 or 7950/7970 can multi monitor on one card.

+ 1 as well to Anusha's comment, what's the point of going X79 when your not putting in a six core, etc.
I would say x79, it will last longer with Ivy bridge E[1155 is at its brink of advancement], you will be able to upgrade later if you want, and it is slot better for sli setups

Last longer as in you will have more life to your socket via CPU upgrade to Ivy Bridge-E which will release sometime in quarter 3 of next year
