[T-Break] DirectX 11.1 might not make it for Windows 7

It seems that the new Direct 11.1 update will remain exclusive to Windows 8. In a Microsoft Answers forum, program manager Daniel Moth stated that, “DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista, but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7

I don't think this a huge problem for me, we have barely tapped into DX11 and 11.1 seems to only have a few minor updates that don't provide a whole lot of benefits over vanilla 11. That being said, it is still unfortunate if true.

I'm relatively sure DX11.1 is as exciting to end users as DX10.1 was. Meaning not at all.

Still, I feel it's a low blow to limit the incremental updates to DX11 to a new OS. Also, if DX11.1 is the rough equivalent of what the Xbox720 supports natively, you will indeed see games that utilize it fairly quickly.

A shame they're so quick to abandon Win7 for DX feature updates but with that said, It's rare enough to find a game that makes full use of DX11 anyway so I'm sure I can wait until the dust settles on Win8 without missing out on too much of that 11.1 goodness thumb.gif
post #7 of 161
Ummm .. yeah. Sooo .. what features shall we dinosaurs who are still gaming on Windows 7 will be missing?
From wiki all I see is
Quote:
DirectX 11.1 is included in Windows 8. It supports WDDM 1.2 for increased performance, features improved integration of Direct2D, Direct3D, and DirectCompute, and includes DirectXMath, XAudio2, and XInput libraries from the XNA framework. It also features stereoscopic 3D support for gaming and video.[39]
which seems like all the features that are also present in the baseline DirectX 11.

I guess its MS luck that there is nothing particularly exlucive in DX 11.1 or future projects might be forced to ose OpenGL instead which offers all the similar features without the artificial market fragmentation in the form of all the "old" windows vs the "new" windows.

Haha, so true. Seriously, what major changes will DX11.1 even bring to the table? I mean, I seriously doubt any recent game in development will even utilize DX11.1, let alone DX11.

Not a big deal at all, as developers wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot only supporting one OS. Besides how many games are Windows 7 only? none because most games are DX 9 or 10 which vista and XP still support.
