Microsoft has to release a patch for it, its not possible to "hack up" a newer version of DirectX for a unsupported OS. People have been trying to get DirectX 10 to run on XP for years, its still not possible.

Meh doesn't matter because just now DX11 games are starting to take over DX9/10, so we will be safe with DX11 for a good 5 years or more.biggrin.gif

Uh no, game developers that are developing games now. Will most likely consider compiling their games with DirectX 11.1 support. We have yet to see how much more performance DirectX 11.1 offers. It could offer more then 3-5 FPS difference in every game versus DirectX 11.0. We don't know because we don't have every piece of the pie yet. With the biggest piece being DirectX 11.1 capable 3D software, that can go back and forth between version 11.0 and version 11.1. Until then we just don't know, the people passing it off as no big deal are obviously clueless. The update brings major performance improvements to the API. I'm very interested to see what kind of gains we will see when utilizing it.

11.1 will become mainstream around the time DX14 is out and being used in <10 titles.

Clueless? The people toting it as no big deal are not just basing it off wild assumptions. And I don't see anyone saying the update will be worthless, but in the grand scheme of things will this get people to switch from W7 to W8. For those who are not ready to switch yet, this will not tip them over the edge. And for those dead set against W8 it certainly won't get them to switch. I personally would have to see HUGE performance gains (>10%) to make me switch right away, otherwise I am going to wait, and so will others. Only potential way this affects the enthusiasts community is if games start rolling out that run on DX 11.1 exclusively. I don't see that happening.

From top of my head I can remember only one game that does not have a DX 9 mode, which is Shattered Horizon. I can play Metro 2033, Crysis with its expansions, etc etc just fine on a DX 9 card. So I would argue that there is substantial difference between a "DX 11 game being out" and a game that requires DX 11 to run at all. Now I'm sure that eventually there will be some awesome hit game that requires DX 11.1 to run and there will me much lamentation and upgrading to Windows 8, however, that day does not seem to be today.

For reference - a screenshot of Steam Hardware survey taken just couple of minutes ago. As you can see there is approx 40% computers which run Steam that actually cant run DX 11 only stuff - in my opinion this is far too great market share for developers to ignore and as such I can believe perhaps DX 10 or DX 10.1 to be the baseline but I dont think I will see a game in near years which runs only and only on DX 11.1 (unless its a Metro game ofc)

Sounds like DX 11.1 implementation is straight forward and likely doesn't require any significant coding. Much like DX 10.1 that would simply fall back to 10 if no hardware support for specific feature was found.

Also I don't get all the drama around DX9, it's simply around because of Xbox, as soon as new Xbox hits all new games will be coded in DX 11 or even DX 11.1 given how GPU seems to be rumored as a custom 7800 series chip.
