Bookshelf speakers or 2.1 System?

Hey guys! I am looking to finally buy a set of speakers for my PC because I am tired of my Sony V6 headphones.
I have a really small budget, $100 max, so I can only get very low level speakers.

My main usage for these speakers will be music and a bit of gaming, but mostly music.

My question is: Should I get a 2.1 speaker system such as this:

http://www.amazon.com/Genius-SW-G2-1-1250-Speaker-System/dp/B0056BPUQC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1352625627&sr=8-2&keywords=2.1+computer+speakers

or

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Speaker-System-Z523-Subwoofer/dp/B002FU5QMK/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1352625655&sr=8-19&keywords=2.1+computer+speakers

Or should I get a pair of bookshelf speakers and a small amp:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SS-B1000-4-Inch-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B000OG88KY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352625693&sr=1-1&keywords=SOny+bookshelf+speakers
+
http://www.amazon.com/LP-2020A-Lepai-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352625713&sr=1-1&keywords=speaker+amplifier

I have never bought any speakers before so I am really confused with all the power ratings, but my room is pretty small so I think that any decent speakers will be loud enough.

i am very fond of m-audio speakers. i have the av40's, but have heard good things about the av30's that are in your budget. check out the reviews: http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-Studiophile-Professional-Reference-Speakers/dp/B000SDLNKA/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&srs=2529856011&ie=UTF8&qid=1352625976&sr=1-1&keywords=m-audio

The link in my sig has feedback from those who have owned both the AV40s and Dayton B652s + Lepai TA2020 and the latter comes out on top and offers better SQ/$$ - if u can await the $49 Pioneer BS21 deal to pop up biggrin.gif

Thanks for that thread! Do you know how the Daytons compare with the Sony B1000s? The Daytons are $10 cheaper.
I'll see if I can find the Pioneers on sale anywhere.

One more question: How much bass do these speakers produce? Do most people get a separate subwoofer?

EDIT: Just checked and the price of the Sony's rose $10 overnight! Now they are $65. I might just wait till Black Friday to get them.

If you decide to give the m-audio av30's a try, do not get the mkii version. Those get poor reviews. Get the original av30's. I think they are on sale for ~90 shipped on Amazon.

The Lepai + b652s seem to be a popular budget 2.0 setup.

Though you might need a powered subwoofer.

My Polk M3 goes down to about 60hz and so far i enjoy them for music w/o a sub but if u are a basshead and for music, better hold out for a good sub rather than splash on a bad one that would mess up your music wink.gif
