AM3+ or FM2? Still cannot decide!

Alright - I'll make this a short and simple story. I have decided I want to downgrade from my Core i7/X79 rig. I have $1000 worth of computer without a case that I don't even fully utilize. $450 of the $1000 computer is my motherboard and CPU only . I surf the web, Job hunt, use the computer on online classes and play games like CS:S, CS:GO, TF2, L4D/L4D2, BF3 (Only "graphically extensive" game I actually play) and WoW. I tend to run SINGLE GPU setups since I hate the idea of Microstudder. I have a HD7870 and I cannot decide whether to sell it and downgrade.

So....My main dilemma is which AMD platform to go for. FX 4300/970 Chipset combo or a A10-5800K/A75 Chipset combo.

I've build an FM2 system for a friend before and I really like the fact that USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s are built into the chipset along with the fact that nearly ALL FM2 boards come standard with a UEFI BIOS. Not to mention HSA which is supposed to be coming within a year. My main concern is lack of CPU power for gaming w/ a 7870/7850/7770 when compared to a Core i3/FX 4300/FX 6300

I've also heard great things about AM3+ and I assume that the processors would fair better for gaming. I also assume that AM3+ will receive PCI-Express 3.0 support sooner than any FM2 chip/chipset would. I know PCI-Express 3.0 doesn't matter much now unless you run a 7970/GTX 680 - BUT it's a feature i'd enjoy none the less. I am skeptical of going with AM3+ because most chipsets rely on an aftermarket USB 3.0 controller and only have 2 SATA 6GB/s ports. Any AM3+ board I pick up won't have support for front panel USB 3.0.

All opinions appreciated - but I am 100% firm on avoiding LGA 1155 due to the socket being replaced by LGA 1150 in 5 months.

AM3+ isn't ever going to have PCI3 or native USB3. It's an extremely dated platform that's only still around for the sake of compatibility and the fact AMD don't want to invest in a new chipset. The PCIE controller is still on the mobo with AM3+. I don't see the point in an FX-4300 when a 5800K is the same thing minus the L3 cache, and if you look at benchmarks L3 is mostly useless for consumer workloads (AMD also said this in a tech blog prior to Bulldozer being released - L3 is server workloads mostly). The only advantage to AM3+ would be 6/8 core cpus and the fact that there are no FM2 boards that will allow 3 graphics cards (not that you care).

A 5800K is basically as good as a 4300 aside from the fact it won't overclock as far. One thing I should mention is that both the 4300 and 5800K might not be adequate for BF3 mp. I remember playing it on a 4100 and it was not smooth at all. If you're deadset on BF3, AM3+ and a 6300 is your best bet. If you can live without absolute smoothness in that one game, I'd suggest FM2 with a 5800K.

edit: A 7870 is a really nice balanced card to go with whatever you choose, so I'd suggest keeping that

+1 on the video card .
I believe the FM2 platform (at present at least ) only makes sense if you are going to use the on die graphics . The 990FX platform is just a tweaked 790FX platform , but if you want to play BF3 Multi player it is the best of the 2 .
Did you consider a used Sandy mobo and CPU . New is good but sometimes if funds are tight second hand is the best way to go - especially if you know someone who is upgrading and wants to get rid of their kit . ( just another possibility ).
Nearly all of my stuff is AMD and it does the job for me but it looks like a used Sandy Bridge machine would suit what you are doing better . (horses for courses )

1.The PCI-E 3.0 support for a single card configuration doesn t matter
2.The native support for USB 3 doesn t matter as well ,most AM3+ board have Entech or Renesas USB 3 controllers.
3.We don t really now if the AM3 + platform will get a new chipset ,it may be very well that SIS or VIA to build a chipset for this boards in the future

Sandy bridge is already outdated merchandise.

The choice is made in regard to budget .

How much money you got there ?!

I would prefer not to spend over $230 between CPU + motherboard. I would prefer MATX but ATX is debatable.
