Thread Starter
ok so heres what i did

i had windows7 running on my HDD

I installed a SSD and am now running windows 7 from that

now when i try to delete certain folders in my HDD it says i do now have permission

I went under the drive properties and tried to give myself permission but it wouldnt let me

how can i get permission so i can delete unneeded stuff from my HDD?

I dont want to format it if at all possible because i already have some things set up with my current windows install to use the HDD

the same thing happened to me actually and i was able to delete the old windows files by changing 'Ownership' and 'Effective Permissions' in the advanced section of security. i then changed it to full control under my account as administrator (just type in "Administrator" for the name). then i was able to delete the stuff, though you should be able to alter it. see if that works.

Why not just back off your user data and reform the drive. Then remap your stuff over (documents, picutes, music, etc) to that drive, and move all your stuff back.

So I've narrowed it down to a few folders causing the issue, so I think I'm going to just hide any of them I can't delete and call it a day

If you have Malwarebytes, it has a tool called File Assassin. I'm not sure if it works on Windows files and you'd have to delete the files in the folder individually, but it might be worth a go.

make sure when you change owner to yourself that the checkbox that says "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" is selected. After that you can change your permissions on the folder or files. Chances are theres a file in the folder that isnt inheriting the permission change and wont let you delete it.
