why hard drives so big?

just thought my HDD in my HTPC was going to fail as i had random freezes of windows explorer(not internet explorer), as i had a spare hitachi 500Gb 5400rpm lappy hdd lying round i thought id clone it to that until i can buy a new full speed one.
Anyways it got me thinking since laptop drives are generally quiter even 7200rpm models, they are also alot smaller easier to mount in my scratch built htpc case, my question is....

What is the advantage of a physically bigger 3.5inch full size hard drive? is it due to platter density or something???

thanks in advance, just thinking of buying a WD 500Gb scorpio black 7200rpm laptop drive as a replacement as i used one for my wifes laptop,
it works quite well and is alot quieter than any full size hdd i ever used, which is really important in any htpc smile.gifthumb.gif

Basically. A 2.5" HDD
uses less power,
runs cooler,
is slightly slower,
runs quieter
and is perfectly suitable for a HTPC

compared to a 3.5" HDD which
uses more power,
is slightly faster,
can be pretty noisy
and is also perfectly suitable for a HTPC.

Personally I'd use a 2.5" drive.
I can't stand the silent hummmmm a 3.5" HDD makes during silent moments in the movie.

i thought the same thing but the scorpio black 500Gb is 5 bucks cheaper than caviar black 500Gb altho the caviar is much better 4x cache and sata III vs sata II

wow thats sweet! cheers for the knowledge thumb.gif dont think its availabe in Australia tho frown.gif could you run it with normal sata ports and power?
also if i was gonna spend that much i would go a 250ish Gb SSD( gonna have a home server up and running soon), if it is available in oz i can assure you its about $100+ more expensive anyways frown.gif

Yeah I believe it's normal SATA connectors.

If you want an SSD look at the thread I just made in the online deals section, an ADATA 256GB SSD is going for only $150 on newegg right now.
