Larger platters means more storage and a physically larger drive allows you to put more platters into it. Plus it keeps price down because you don't need to have super high densities. Though the 4TB drives (a majority of them) are running 4 platters at 1TB storage per platter... That is VERY impressive.

Nah, seagate is noisy too but I was using a Samsung F3 Spinpoint, I had to put it in a rubber enclosure and inside my HTPC's case for it to be on the same noise level of a 2.5" HDD

Now I just run it with a 2.5" HDD or a Samsung SSD ... I can't remember

I'd say you just pick up a scorpio drive if you really don't want any sound. Any comparable desktop drive (Blue/Black) will be faster than the Laptop HDD. For an HTPC the laptop drive should be fine.
