wifi signal not as strong as it should be

Thread Starter
I have a Thomson TWG870UG router which a friend of mine also has except my wifi signal is weaker then his. I've been told that having multiple cordless phones could be effecting the signals strength.

When I'm in his house you are able to get wifi out his back garden but in my house you can lose signal down stairs in certain rooms. Any ideas how to fix the signal strength?

Wireless signal will bounce off walls and has trouble going through certain materials. The routers have the same signal strength, but your house is different than his. Perhaps you could find a better location to place the router in?

If its an 802.11b or g router, you will get interference from cordless phones as they both work on 2.4 GHz

I think it might be on a channel that's too congested... if you have a windows laptop you can download inssider and have a look at what channels are in use by whataever APs and then choose one that's not very crowded. That would help a lot...

also there's a tool from amped wireless for android as well called wifi analytics... it does the same thing inssider does and shows you the channels as well.

also there's something called airmapper from fluke networks for android as well that has more in depth testing, however it's harder to get as you gotta fill out a form and give them email address and stuff like that... and sometimes the apk didn't work so I contacted them and they are working to resolve some of the issues with the app.

I would highly recommend doing some scanning with these apps and choosing a less congested channel and seeing if this helps ;-)

I'm mostly the only one on the Internet and I have 120mb fibre broadband.

your neighbors might have thier APs/Routers on the same channel you are on... that's what I meant... please download one of the tools I mentioned and give that a shot to see if that's the case.

My neighbour is an old man and I have no one on the other side of my house. Plus I pick up his broadband.

are there a lot of old appliances in your house that might be on thier last legs...? those are known to screw with the wifi as well....

also using the router on a good surge protector or better, a UPS would supply clean power to the router and it would perform better.

if all else fails you might have to get a more powerful router...
