Worried about my computer- help plz

Hi everybody!!

I built 2 systems, identical in parts. One of which has an issue that puzzles me greatly.
(in short if I press any number key on the numpad of the keyboard it turns off the computer)
We went to a specific website and tried to login using the numpad on the keyboard. As soon as any number was pressed on the numpad the computer would shut down. We tested the computer for over an hour on different websites without pressing any numbers on the numpad but used the numbers above the letters and nothing happened. We pulled up the Calculator and tested the numpad. The computer turned itself off.
For the life of me I can't find anything that would cause this.

The systems are brand new, just over a month old.

Gigabyte GTX 670OC Windforce
Samsung 830 128GB SSD
Corsair HX750 PSU
Windows 8 Release preview

Does anyone have the slightest idea what could cause this?

Thank you in advance,

Paul

USB port ( Assuming it is a USB keyboard ) could be shorting out on something. Have you connected it to another port, or used a PS2 connector?

oddly enough without doing anything to the USB connection or the keyboard it stopped turning off when the numpad was being used.

So it sounds like the keyboard and or USB port its plugged into is shorting?

It's a possibility, especially if it's temperamental. Change ports, or connected to front I/O to see if it makes a difference.

Could be. Take a flashlight and look straight into all of your USB ports very carefully. If you see a little metal piece dangling down in one of them, bend it back carefully. Your computer should be off during this process.

Why hitting the numpad would cause this issue, I haven't the slightest idea. It's not like the series of bits the computer receives each time a key is pressed does anything to the hardware.

What kind of shutdown are you talking about? Like it immediately powers off or enters a normal shut-down?

it pops up saying "Shutting Down" goes about 5 seconds and does a normal shut down. It hasn't happened again since I last reported. Very odd.

Have you tried formatting and re-installing the operating system? Other people asked if you have tried different keyboards and/or USB ports, what of this? Keyboard DO have shutdown keys sometimes, if it's a ****ty keyboard then it's possible the numpad got mixed up in there. Not anything I've seen before, but this doesn't sound like a computer-side short.

no since the problem seems to have fixed itself. Now I can't repeat the problem if I wanted to and everything seems to work as it should.
