[HWI] Gaming in Windows 8 vs Windows 7: what's the difference in performance?

We want to find out whether game performance is different in Windows 8 than in Windows 7. We took the flagship graphics card from AMD (Radeon HD 7970) and Nvidia (GeForce GTX 680) along with the latest drivers and ran a series of gaming benchmarks in Windows 7 and 8. Our test system consisted of an Intel Core i7 3960X (Sandy Bridge-E) processor, an ASUS P7X79 Pro motherboard, 16 GB Corsair DDR3-1600 RAM, a Samsung Spinpoint F1 hard disk and a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1200 watt power supply.

These tests are moronic. 7 wasn't appreciably faster than Vista at launch. They also reinforce the asinine mentality that gaming is the only thing that matters. Boot time doesn't matter? Sleep time? Battery life? Hell, IE10 is a wonderful browser, and would be absolute perfection if it had robust plugin support.

Windows 8 is in its infancy, and has plenty of time to mature and receive better first and third party support. Windows 7 on the other hand is just going to pretty much stay where it is.

The article is only about gaming. It's extremely narrow, not moronic. They also mention that it took a long time for XP users to switch, but that it did happen. They're not saying don't ever switch, just that if gaming is your main priority and you want to see if the newest addition to the Windows lineup will improve your FPS, the answer is no. For the time being (beyond two titles), it's a wash.

I've tested W8 extensively (gaming aside) and I don't want to switch right now. If Windows 8 added 15% or so, I'd at least get a W8 install for games immediately. Thanks to this article, I know that it doesn't, so no need for me to do that.

My problem isn't with the data they've collected, or their conclusion. My problem is with how OCN values this information.

"Their tests are moronic."

Doesn't exactly seem in line with that way of thought... But whatever, doesn't matter to me. Hopefully people will read the article and come to their own conclusions.

Don't misquote me. The error you've made completely changes the implication.

Perhaps it would have been better to say that "Posting these tests is moronic." OCN, in general, has a massive issue with viewing information objectively.
