Not that I'll install win8 on my PC, but this number is too damn high. This looks more like typo.
This is bothering me as well. That number is insane. Either it's a typo, or something went wrong during the benchmark itself, either on win7 or win8. Unfortunately they don't state anything about their methodology, so for all we know they may have just run each benchmark once on each system and called it a day.
That said, all Batman results show pretty high numbers compared to the other tests, so there might be something very peculiar about this one specific game. Would've been nice if the article went into that further, but it appears the person doing the testing and writing barely even noticed.

Looks like I'll be getting Win8 now. Got to have the latest DirectX!

i notice that although the average framerates may be the same or lower, the games run much more fluent and feel like there is less micro stutter to them.

I'll definitely install Windows 8 in my system. The reason is simple, for (near) future gaming. As the day goes by, I'm pretty sure that more and more game companies will take advantage of DirectX 11.1 for their games. And when that day arrives, I don't have to waste my time with the hectic of installing Windows 8. Beside, Microsoft is now focusing more on Windows 8 than Windows 7 and this mean that there'll be more drivers being released for Windows 8 to improve it performance (including in gaming). Also, in games like Battlefield 3, we can clearly see a significant performance improvement in Windows 8 for AMD GPU on a 1920x1080 resolution. So, Windows 8 is absolutely the best choice for me. thumb.gif

It's like with the "trend" of Nintendo only using low-end hardware in consoles...despite the N64 and Gamecube being quite fast for their time and only the Wii and Wii U being arguably under-powered.
The "memory leaks" was simply Vista using your RAM to cache programs, it easily gave it up. At the very least, those were the ones I knew of that most people complained about. FPS was lower than XP but games were a lot smoother, I know, I ran Vista from beta on a Athlon XP 2600+ Single core with 1GB RAM, the touted performance issues were completely crap unless you were on a 1Ghz Pentium III. It did use more RAM than 7 on average but
Latency, ever heard of MIcrostutter? You can have ultra high FPS but if there's significant pauses between frames then you'll sure as hell see it. I was playing a lot of Oblivion and Guitar Hero 3, XP I got lag on GH3 but on Vista despite having lower FPS it was smoother.
FPS can be skewed by software bugs and lag and is hardly the end all be all of gaming performance.

Yes but I mentioned earlier microstutter is mostly on the driver's side and not so much client side. That usually gets taken care of relatively quickly with drivers and patches.

It never did in XP in my testing; and you always have less FPS with less microstutter, even if it is all down to drivers the fact is XP drivers never have had half of the improvements Vista/7 drivers have, hence why XP now gets significantly lower FPS than Vista/7, the whole WDDM thing helped a lot to, it's much improved over the system XP had in place hence why Vista and 7 just feel more fluid and smooth in general.

Neither does 8, it uses a hybrid version of hibernation; it's not really a fair comparison unless you take into account that with hibernation features active 7 can boot nearly as fast.

A good and fair comparison to determine which OS alt tabs in and out of games faster would be turning Aero off in Windows 7. As far as I know Aero is turned off when fullscreen games are being run, and it has to be turned back on when you alt-tab to the desktop. Turning it off will most probably make Windows 7 faster.

Also, it would be interesting to determine how much the absence of Aero in Windows 8 contributes to the lower memory usage of Windows 8.

And what makes you so sure that a minor update to DirectX will suddenly get the attention of everybody ? Not even DirectX 10, let alone DirectX 10.1 did. Now we have fairly powerful DirectX 11 cards in people's systems - HD 5000 and HD 6000 and GTX 400 and GTX 500 series, with Windows Vista (with the Platform Update installed) and Windows 7 installed, and suddenly a minor update to DirectX 11 is going to become the norm ? No, it won't.

Microsoft's main goal should be to convince people to get off from Windows XP, and that means get people to use any newer Windows versions. Ostracising people by forcing them to upgrade to an OS that has the exclusive of a minor update to DirectX in this economically troubled climate would not be a wise decision at all.

I'll probably be sticking with Windows 7 for a while like most of us did with XP when Vista came out. I hope companies keep releasing good Windows 7 drivers in the future.
