SSD Storage Space

Thread Starter
I was wondering if SSDs came with as much space as advertised? I know with traditional harddrives you might not get the full terabyte you might get 900 something gb. Does this remain true with SSDs?

Thanks

Yes it does. My 64GB SSD only has 59.4GB of space when formatted.

SSDs also have less usable space than advertised but the reasoning is different to traditional HDDs.

HDDs have less space because they use 1KB = 1000bytes (and so on) conversion ratio. So 1000GB is about 930GiB.

But SSDs do have the real advertised amount of flash installed in the drive. Why you "see" less is because what is missing is kept aside for the controller as over provisioning. That helps keep write speeds from dipping much.)

Some please one correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the overprovisioning is counted in the drive total. That's why some drives are listed as 120GB instead of 128GB even though they still have 128Gb of actual NAND on them - the extra space is reserved. I know that's how the early Sandforce drives were, but I don't know if that is still true now.

For most SandForce drives, the reason for the smaller adevrtised capacity is because of RAISE and not due to additional OP. One of the exceptions is Intel which does use the extra space as OP instead of RAISE since they cherry pick the NAND that goes into their SSDs.

All SSDs take advantage of the 7% disparity between GiB and GB to use as OP.

Thanks, I knew it was something specific about Sandforce.
