Since the debate is concerning the GTX680 vs 7970 overclockability, you must pay a prime price for voltage unlocked GTX680 while most 7970 are voltage unlocked & 200$ cheaper if not more.

The 7970 can be as fast as the GTX680 if not faster even if both are overclocked (with 12.11 of course).

Spending 600$ for a graphic card when newer series are around the corner is really not a smart move. Get the cheapest option, both the 7970 and gtx680 can max pretty much anything. When you will feel you need something better, the 200-300$ you saved will serve you to get a 89XX / 7XX serie card.

If you spend now on a 600$ GTX680, trust me, your card will lose 50% of its value after one generation.

But heh, it is your money, feel free to spend it as you wish.

It all comes down to whether or not a person is happy with their choice I believe. My only personal experience so far has been with Nvidia (currently GTX 670 FTW, formerly the GTX 460m in my Asus lappy and the 9400m in my MBP-which was a GIFT). Now I bought my daughter an HP laptop with an AMD APU and was quite surprised by its gaming capabilities. Sure, it is only 1366x768 and most games need low/medium settings but games run fluidly at those settings on that laptop. I was considering a second 670 FTW for my current rig but with the recent driver improvements on the AMD side I will most likely sell my 670 in the near future and go crossfire 7950 or 7970's instead. I respect the right of fanboys on each side of the aisle to stick their collective heads in the sand and deny with their dying breath the merits of the competitions products but I am not one of them.

Whoa, how did I get off on that tangent? I should have stuck to the subject and said 7950/7970 all day long!

I apologize for coming off a little rash. What I meant was that for the money, the Asus 680 is not worth it considering the Lightning 680 is cheaper and voltage-unlocked.

Heck no is the 7970 garbage. In fact, I'd recommend the Matrix 7970 over any card at this moment in time

I dont even think there are any if just a few 680's that cost $600, the best one only cost $460.

I failed, what ever, the GTX680 is easily 100$ more expensive than the 7970. I went for the 7950 as it was 250$ less expensive with 3 free games than the GTX680 (unlocked) and 100$ cheaper than the 7950.

560$ * 7% = 600$ tax-in

If you can get your 7950 to ~1250MHz | 1700-1800MHz, it will be very competitive with Lightnings (~1350MHz | ~7000MHz)

Keyword here is 'if' as 1250MHz will require some luck but is not unheard of (My Gigabyte 7950 does 1280MHz | 1800MHz). Test your luck. Nonetheless for what you paid, the 7950 is unmatched
