Better Cost/Cooling Ratio?

Thread Starter
I just bought a new p8 z77 deluxe and i7 3770k to replace an Asrock Z77 e6 and i5 2500k (Asrock Mobo was failing). I currently have the Hyper 212 EVO on my 2500k, but I'm thinking I need a little better cooling for my new 3770k. I was looking at the H100, but after research, I don't think it will fit into my HAF 912. I just don't have the time or expertise to do a custom loop. So, I'm thinking about getting the EVGA Superclock, which has impressive benchmark results. I'd rather stay away from overly large and heavy air-coolers like the Noctua NH-D14.

However, I'm wondering if I should just upgrade my case to fit the H100. Newegg has the Corsair C70 on sale for about $69 after rebates and the H100 for $94 after sale. $163 for an H100 and C70 seems like a pretty cool deal, but is it worth it over what I have now? I'm very cost conscious and want only the best cost/performance/time ratio. With that in mind, do you think its worth it to switch from the HAF 912 and CM Hyper 212 EVO to the Corsair C70 and H100? Or, would I be better off just sticking with my HAF 912 and picking up the EVGA Superclock for $51?

Would I see any kind of noticeable cooling difference between an HAF 912 / EVGA Superclock and Corsair C70 / H100? For that matter, would I see any noticeable difference between either of those choices and my current Hyper 212 EVO?

Does the HAF 912 have better airflow than the Corsair C70, or are they about on par with each other?

A bong cooler system can be built for $170 total.Lower temps than any radiator system..only thing lower will have a chiller.Next step is phase.

I just don't have the time or expertise for any kind of custom cooler like that. I wouldn't trust myself to not screw something up at this point, even if I had the time. Right now I'm in grad school and a single parent so 99% of my time is spent between the two.

Honestly, your best cost/ cooling ratio is using what you already have on hand and not spending more money on something else. Sure more cooling means you can OC a tad more, but it really doesn't justify it when you start talking about $ spent. Unless you think it is worth spending an extra $100 or two for a slightly higher clock, I would keep the case and cooler you already have.

just my two cents

Why even get a 3770K? so you can clock lower for daily?(I missed that b4)
SB>IB for daily high overclocks.

No, not engineering school, lol. Medical school....

As far as an XSPC kit, I don't really have the time for the setup and maintenance. Plus, I'd be extremely worried about it leaking all over my expensive components. I guess it just intimidates me a little. If computer components weren't so expensive, I wouldn't be that worried about it. However, if I fry my motherboard, then I would not be able to get another one for a long time and I need my computer for school work.

Thanks! So you think I will only achieve a slightly higher clock with the H100 compared with the 212 EVO? Slightly higher, meaning a few hundred MHz? Do you think I would be able to squeeze out more than 600 MHz beyond what the 212 EVO will allow me to do?

I have heard that IB runs a lot hotter than SB when overclocking and so that's why I was thinking that I needed better cooling.

I upgraded my CPU because my AsRock z77 e6 was a piece of crap and crapped out on me. So I needed a new MoBo and just picked up a new cpu with it. I went with the i7 because the HT would help me with encoding and rendering. I went with IB because it was on sale with the MoBo that I got, and so it seemed like the better deal. USB 3 was also appealing. I almost went with SB-E 3820, but it was too expensive.

UPDATE*

I went a head and bought the Corsair C70 and H100 due to the major sale and multiple rebates. After the rebates, the C70 will be $69 and the H100 will be about $70.. While that's certainly more than what I wanted to spend, another reason kind of pushed me over the edge. My daughter has been begging me for a TV in her room, so I think I'll build her one with the left over parts and whatever components that I have lying around the house. While it wouldn't be too much of a problem getting her shows through netflix/vudu/hulu, I am a little worried about her having access to the internet in her room. I'll probably just throw some nazi-like parental controls on both the computer and router. Anyway, thanks for your advice!
